Pain after urinating

My son is 9 yo. He had an episode of a burning pain after he urinated a few weeks ago. I took him to the doctor and they checked his urine and didn't find anything.

The doctor said she thought it could be from his urine being too concentrated and causing stinging so she told him to drink a lot of water. She also mentioned he might want to try to retract his foreskin while showering and clean underneath. He's still complaining about his penis hurting after he urinates, much more often now. He's been drinking a lot but said he has not been retracting his foreskin, it does not retract all the way yet. But I don't know if he should be trying to do that anyway??

Any other ideas of where the stinging pain could be coming from? My 4 yo also said that his pee feels "hot" sometimes, which I'm guessing means it kind of stings as well. Could it just be some skin irritation that stings from urine??

Thanks for any help!

The burning can be due to separation process (when urine touches torn adhesions it may feel like if you urinate on a fresh wound).

totally agree with that ! it's like what we call micro tears can appear after the foreskin starts to release from the penis so retraction can happen

Is there anything to minimize the pain?

Yes, have him pee with is penis submerged in a cup of water. This will take the sting off.

You do not need to worry about retracting him. That was poor advice from that doctor. Trying to retract can cause micro-tears that will sting even more when he pees. Imagine having a little cut in your labia and having the urine pass over it. Only 50% of boys are retractable at age 10. Sexual maturity and release of hormones will enable him to retract when he is older. Right now his penis is self cleaning. Only clean what is seen.

Be aware that using soaps on the genitals can cause irritation and flora imbalance (resulting in yeast). Make sure he is only using warm water down there.

Does he have any other symptoms of a yeast infection? If he does then try OTC yeast creams (the ones they make for women.)

Does he take bubble baths, use soap down there or swim frequently in chlorinated water? Those can cause skin irratation.
