Is the Ergo really all that?

And has anyone tried the Ergo Sport? I need a new carrier - I have a mei tai that I like but don't love, I'd love it if I could get the baby on my back but try as I might I haven't yet mastered it. I like the look of the Ergo and think it would work better but I'm hesitant to shell out the money for it (or, if anyone has a great back carrier suggestion, let me know!). And I was looking at the Sport because it gets horribly hot here in the summer.

I don't know about the sport specifically but I do love my Ergo. I avoided buying one for years, and I have a ton of other carriers, (Mei Tai's, a Beco Butterfy, AMC, wraps, etc.) so I didn't think I needed another carrier, much less a SSC. BUT, I am very happy I got it. Back carries are easy, any my LO is 25 months and 32 ish pounds.

If you search on thebabywearer.com they have reviews and pics comparing the regular ergo vs the sport version.

The best thing about the Ergo is how versatile it is, and it can be used comfortably for a long time. My big 2 year old recently grew out of the Ergo so now we use the Toddler Patapum. I personally recommend the Ergo. We got lots of good use out of it.

I thought Ergos were all that, until I got one. I was very disappointed at the fit (I have narrow shoulders and the shoulders didn't like to stay on) and my partner is very large and it didn't fit him in several place, not just the waist (for which you can buy an extender). I also looked at thebabywearer.com site and there are so many carriers that have higher reviews than the Ergo now.

That said, I haven't tried the Ergo Sport. I heard it would be better fitting for my large partner. But we decided to get a Kozy Carrier instead after reading such great reviews.

I LOVE my ergo. The sport version is interesting, but imo a black carrier isnt going to be cool even if it is a blend. I have a blue (not denim one) that I (miraculously! it is exactly what I was looking for) found on cragslist. You can also find them on ebay if you are trying not to spend as much $$.

i love it. it's ugly, but comfortable. i actually don't think i'll ever go back to a sling. i carried my older two in a pouch sling until they were 2 and 3 and now i have no idea how i did that!

the ergo is seriously ugly, though. i hate the way it looks. but oh so comfortable.

We had an Ergo and sold it.... we just didn't like it...

The shoulders slipped and the straps dug in for both of us... it was just not comfortable...

I wear my DS in a woven wrap and DH loves the MT....

I love my Ergo and vastly prefer it to my Mei tai, even though the MT is prettier.

I do love my mei tai, it's super-pretty and super comfy for a front carry, but the only way I can wear it on my back (and this is going to sound so shallow) is to cross the straps in front, but I'm a DD so it makes me look like Madonna, and not in a good way I wore the baby this past weekend at the band festival and got several comments on my mei tai

It was/is for me. I got it after my 4th child was born and had tried numerous other carriers/slings with my other kids and the Ergo was finally the one that worked for me.

I would go to their website and see if you can find a local retailer where you can go and try one on to see how it fits.

Also, there is a warning up on their page now about some counterfeit ones being sold, so make sure you go to an authorized dealer.

that's one reason it took me so long to try one. I thought they were so plain and ugly looking. Then they came out with embroidery, and I got this organic black one and think it looks pretty enough.

Even my DH wore it at the grower's market so apparently it isn't too girly looking.

I love my ergo!!!!

I've tried a bunch of different carriers and slings and prefer my ergo by far! I'm not familiar with the sport but I have a light tan ergo and get questions and complements everywhere I go.

I love that it distributes the weight over my hips instead of my back and I actually like it if the shoulder straps are loose.

I wish I would have gotten one when my 2 yo was a baby but I'm so glad I have it now so that I can carry my 5 mo and still do things with my toddler!

Totally agree! It takes the weight off your back which is awesome, because if you've been holding LO all day anyway, your back already feels soreish so I like that the weight of the baby/toddler is spread throughout your hips. It helps a lot.

I also agree that the shoulders feel best if they are kind of lose. If you tighten them too much, I think the whole "feel" is off and it makes the baby seem heavier.

I have been using the Ergo for a long time. It's the regular organic in sage; I am very happy with it. I can't compare it to others like the mei tei but I couldn't survive w/o it now. I will be using it for a long time to come. DD is 14 months and 23 lbs.

I haven't used the Ergo, but I just got a Beco and I'm in love. It distributes the weight to the hips magnificently, and they come in lots of beautiful prints! It also has a taller body than the Ergo (16" instead of 13"), so we'll get more use out of it as DD grows.

I debated for SO long before buying my ergo. I actually wanted the beco but the saleswoman talked me into the (cheaper & uglier) ergo & I LOVE it. My dh likes it to & ds is apparently quite content with the decision. It is easy to use & comfy but I do wish it was prettier - lol.
