We are getting ready to completely redo our lawn, which is pretty much weeds right now and we need to fill in some large holes. What is an easy way to kill off grass/weeds without having to use some yucky sprays? We tried black plastic and even after months that didn't work. I've used dawn/vinegar/salt before to kill weeds but it would take massive amounts to kill off our grass. Ideas?

Cut it out with a sod cutter (you can rent one). You can move the sod if you need it somewhere else, or perhaps give it to a neighbor. You can use it to fill in holes in grass. Or, just flip it over and it will die.

I'd second cutting it out. You can't kill running grass with black plastic - it grows up to 1 or so ft under ground. We just cut out 6ft x 1.5 ft of cooch grass we let go in a garden bed - it was hard work but worth it.
Dont poison the weeds if you want to plant there though. If you just want to remove soft weeds boiling water will make them wilt and die after a couple of days.
Good luck.
