Just wondering about your placentas!

What did yours look like? Anything strange? What did you do with it afterward? I know some people were thinking of encapsulating, how did that go?

Mine had tiny calcium spots on it just like with dd1! I was a VERY good dairy consumer! It also had a 2 vessel cord, which we knew about from previous ultrasounds.

After DH discovered it on the counter in the hospital room at the end of the 2nd day, we took it home (after one nurse said "Take it! Its yours!" much to our surprise) and gave it to our midwife who is going to plant it in her garden next to her big sisters!

Ours went to pathology. I should have asked to have it afterward, but I didn't think. I would have loved to plant it in his garden.

Did you ever get the results back from the pathology?

Nevermind. I read the answer from your blog. You write so well Dawn. I can't stop reading it. I'm hanging on every word.

Mine is still in the freezer. I wish I could encapsulate it. How much does something like that cost? Can I still do it even tho its been freezed?

It looks awful tho. Soooo calcified. It seems that with each one its worse. It looked overly mature too. DD had so much verinex on her that she looked premature but a 10lb premature infant who is now 13 lbs!

I'm wondering if its an environmental issue??? The placenta looking so calcified and raggid. We had foam insulation done on our house 8 weeks prior to the birth. Thats the only environmental concern I have.

Three vessles. VERY LONG CORD! I'll show you.

let me know if you can't view the link.

Placenta smoothie here

It didn't look too great after the L&D nurse butchered it to get a HUGE chunk for pathology : I still took some pictures and am glad I did

I had mine encapsulated. This was my first baby though, so I can't say whether it made me feel better or not. That said, I wasn't about to let all those nutrients go to waste!

I planned to have mine encapsulated, but I waited too long. DP and I made some placenta prints, but they didn't come out as well as last time for some reason.

Now it is frozen. I would love to plant it on family property that we know won't be sold, but no such property exists. So I have asked my MW to let us plant it at her house. We still have our second daughter's placenta in the freezer and we'll plant them together. She said we could plant a peach tree and she'll send us peaches when it produces them ...

We buried it with my cat who died a few weeks before Joyce's birth http://www.our-great-adventure.net/g...p?/category/19 but we first took a part of it to make Joyce's own homeopathic remedy.
Actually, I still have the base (with the placenta part in it) just next to me

Mine is in my freezer.

It was HUGE. And now it's gone. We took a photo of it. Ew.

I didn't see mine because of the unplanned c-section. The nurse commented on the thickness of the umbilical cord, though. I wish I had seen it. I always wondered how it would look like after 42 weeks, especially since it took me a while to completely quit smoking.

The doctor said, "wow, that's a thick placenta." I didnt see any white spots, but I really just glanced at it. It looked really big and healthy, dark red and very smooth. I blamed it on lots of protein and vitamin c. I didnt do anything with it other than look at it, because we had to be in the hospital for 36 hours and dp would have been freaked by taking it home.

Oh Dawn! This brought tears to my eyes. And your blog about the regrets brought them streaming down my cheeks. You just never know what you truley would have wanted in times like those. You did what you knew at the time. I"m so glad they did the things they did, bathing, dressing and photos of him. I'm not sure if I would have thought of those things at that time. I"m also glad that the charm got to you and that it is bringing you some type of comfort.

To answer the question: I did the encapulation and I do think it made a difference. I still have alot of pills left that I think I'm gong to freeze and save for necessary moments or even till menopause. I didn't look at my placenta as I just couldn't but I did see the MW talk about it and show it on camera a bit, nice to have that on tape. Oh the encapulation gal said it was a big one as generally you get 70-80 capsules and I got 120!

It costs $250 (thankfully I got a huge discount as the gal knows about my sister's PPD). I belive she said you can still do it if it was ref right away and then was frozen within 36 hours...but don't quote me on that, call a encapulation specialist and ask.

I was happy just to see mine this time, since I wasn't even awake for the birth of my first. My midwife showed it to me and explained each part, and I found it truly fascinating. I didn't want to keep it, but now I wish I had at least taken a photo. I didn't even think of that!

we all looked at it together and my midwife really explained it beautifully to my son. The amniotic sac was mostly intact and she stretched it out to show how it was a "cave" for his sister.

Then I said I didn't need to keep it and the MW and her assistant were REALLY surprised and discussed at some length what to do with it and who would get it, etc. They were very excited that I said they could have it. I said I wasn't going to use it and if someone else could, than better that than to throw it away. Later I wondered if that was weird, but I feel okay about the decision. My MW is a traditional chinese medicine practitioner also, and I guess they make it into medicine.

Our mw assistant did placenta prints, which I thought turned out ok, and now it's in the freezer. It did leave us for a jaunt out and about to be shown to some nursing students, but now its back and we're going bury it and plant a tree/bush/something over it. We're busy, but it's taking up freezer space so I hope we can get that done sometime soon. We buried my son's placenta but didn't think about it much in advance so nothing special.

I remember looking at mine, but everything is so fuzzy and I don't think I looked too long. I didn't choose to keep it. I remember asking if it looked okay b/c they had been worried about the placenta being old and "worn out" at 41 weeks. It was fine.

Mine was really dark, and SMALL!!!
I just got the MW's to take it away as we don't have a garden.

I'm wishing I had made birth art with it though
