I Get it Now

my college educated friend asked me if I could feel my milk. I thought she ment letdown (which I can't feel) but then she asked if it felt cold.

even natural minded, college educated respectable women are missing out on BFing info.

i get it now what normalizing is all about.

Like, she thought it was refrigerated inside your breasts?

I'm going to sound like an ass, but I don't think that's normalizing...I think it's just quite dense lol.
I don't think that even the most uneducated people would think that milk was cold...why would anyone assume it was any different than any other body fluid?

Weird. Definitely sad, too, but I couldn't help but sort of LOL after picturing ice cold boob milk "on tap".

I don't get what's so wrong with that question - if a woman has never breastfed a child before they would have no clue what it feels like and that seems like an honest, logical question.

thats a strange thing to think. if breastmilk were meant to be cold, why to bottle feeding parents HEAT the bottles?

i laughed too and told her i didn't have fridges in my boobs (and joked there wasn't room like she had)

she just thought milk=like in the fridge= cold

she is a bit ditsy, but i never expected a question like that from her. i think i may be the first person she has ever known to breast feed. i know i am the first person i have ever known breast feeding. i think i am in the formula belt

: That is the funniest thing I've heard all day, thanks for sharing! I mean, of course it's cold, that's why the headlights are always on, right? : That is sad though, maybe she just wasn't thinking about it. Or maybe she thinks cows milk comes out of the teat cold? This is the problem with our society. Most of us live too far from the barnyard.

It seems to me a lack of understanding about spoilage, breast emptying, and the body replenishing supply. After all, if milk is room temperature (or body temperature), it wouldn't stay good for long. How does one's body ensure that the milk a child is getting isn't spoiled? Going with the assumption that the breasts are like storage tanks that stay full all the time.

It is kind of a dumb question, about the cold, but I can see the gears that would be turning to produce a question like this. I don't think I fully grasped all of the supply and demand stuff until I was in the middle of it, either. Although I never expected cold breasts. So I guess something rational was churning in my brain.

oh it was and I was thrilled that she asked and was getting read to talk about let down and how the breast works and all the cool stuff I've learned, then she said "Is is cold" and my thought train derailed.

I understand how this question would seem silly to many who have already breastfed a baby but coming from a woman who has never experienced breastfeeding for herself why it such a ridiculous question? I would highly doubt that there is anywhere on the internet that she could google to find the answer so she asked a friend who has been there, done that.

I agree, this is a good (funny!) example of the need for normalizing BF.

My DD actually will say "Need odder side. This side is too hot. Odder side cold." I figure that's more like wanting the cool side of the pillow, but maybe I DO have coolers in my hooters!

odd question
but glad you were able to give her some good info.

When I was younger (pubescent) I remember feeling my breasts and asking about their anatomy of my mother and her friend- no milk ducts or feeding the baby talk there. Then there was health class and anatomy- no talk of breastfeeding there either. Strange, huh? Seems like a pretty basic function of the female body.

On a humorous note, sometime right after DD was born when my milk was still coming in floods, DH held a cloth up to one of my breasts and then looked at me, startled, saying "it's so WARM!" I think I said "well, of course it is, it is coming out of my body." To which he replied "I know, but I didn't know it would be that warm." Hahaha.

My brother didn't know that my milk was not dairy. I said well I'm not a cow! he thought it was just like cow's milk.
