we've rented a dumpster.

it's arriving today.

because i have a problem. we have so much stuff i feel like the walls are caving in. i know that there will be stuff that could be donated or sold that will go in the dumpster. hopefully not much, but still...some. and i have to come to terms with that, because i NEED to get this stuff out. it is sucking the life and soul out of me and out of our house. 10 years' worth of accumulated crap. it really REALLY needs to just be GONE. if i were a different person without hoarding issues or with better organizational skills or even follow through, i wouldn't need a dumpster. i could do it all "the right way", slowly, responsibly. but that's not reality.

so we rented a dumpster. it's arriving today. and this weekend, we will purge about 50% of the contents of our home. and it will feel WONDERFUL!!!!

We are looking to move (renting) this summer. I have already told DH that I am NOT bringing all this crap with us. we will be getting a dumpster soon too. i have already donated over 17 boxes to the salvation army and have 3 large garbage bags in my trunk for good will (they have been there for 3 weeks now...). It will feel so good when it is done, believe me. I am opnly 1/2 way there and it is getting better all the time.

I had a friend who did this but she didn't realize how many dumpster emptying trips it would take to clear her house out. Good luck with your space clearing!

oh god, i think we're only allowed to fill it up once. we get it for 5 days and then they come pick it up. we'd better not haev more than 12yds worth of crap!!! *faint*

If you are worried about having too much for the dumpster you could just put all the useable stuff in a pile with a Free sign. Whatever is left toss after your 5 days. Maybe have someone post on Craigslist "pile of free stuff for 5 days in front of (address) more added regularly" or something like that.

Congratulations on decluttering!!! You are right it will feel wonderful.

ITA! you can haul "stuff" out to the curb for free, while you fill the dumpster with trash. on day four or whatever, if you aren't able to schedule a charity to come pick up your "stuff" then put whatever is left and will fit into the dumpster. that way, you won't run out of room.

i'm a dumpster addict. i've had a 6 yard dumpster several times, and they fill up fast. however, as for any guilty feelings about usable things ending up in the dumpster, no worries, let it go - think of the lucky person who will be so excited to find them at the dump!

good idea!!

We did this 2 years ago and it felt great afterward! Yes, alot of "good" stuff went in there, but we had to just get rid of it to give ourselves a fresh start. We've donated alot since then so I think we're good for Karma.

As for filling it up, if you take the time to "organize" the bin, you can surprisingly fit alot into it. Instead of just throwing it all in, place it in where you find space. Eg: putting the small lamp under the chair instead of on top, etc. We had ours for a week too, and managed only p/u with putting things in there in a way to utilize space.

Good Luck!!!

Let the magic begin...

It will feel great to clear some space. Maybe you could post Free Pile on Craigslist if you have good weather, otherwise go for it.

There is no use saving all that stuff and making your house into the dump, it might as well go to the actual dump. Hugs from another hoarder, you can do this

ok we're getting ready to start. DH is mowing the lawn right now and i'm making a list of all of the BIG things we wanna get rid of. i figure we'll make sure all of those get in the dumpster first since those are impossible to do in regular trash. so here's my plan:

1. clear out the shed, leaving only the huge filing cabinet we're saving and the lawn mower and weed wacker. this will take a long time. LOL
2. get the big items out of the living spaces (ie, not attic or crawl space)
3. demolish the built-in bookshelves in the family room (these were created for DH's cd collection and don't hold other things well)
3. start on the attic - remove everything except for christmas ornaments and statue boxes.
4. attack the crawl space - pretty much everything can go. huuuge totes of clothes will be donated. there is one tote of DH's old star wars action figures which we'll also save. other than that, buh bye!

then either later on tonight or tomorrow we'll probably try to paint the family room since the bookshelves will be gone and will leave the walls messed up. LOL

We did that last year!

We had a 20ft roll-off dumpster and filled it to max capacity. Here's what it looked like when we were done...
