Another newbie...with questions of course

Thread Starter
So, my son is almost 7 weeks old. We've been using the sposies I got at a baby shower. (DH is military and not going to be home for another 2 weeks and the idea of extra laundry was overwhelming) However, when we took our bath today I noticed that everywhere the diaper had touched him was bright red. (Stupid mommy, no wonder he screams during diaper changes again) We had been using Huggies but ran out and started using the Pampers Swaddlers... No more of that!

I have a really good stash of cloth dipes. However, that's pretty much all I have. I have a few inserts (of all sorts. Some bamboo and something else) I also have 3 bumgenius 3.0 right now. I have a couple of the nylon underwear covers...but MIL got a medium and it's still a bit too big. I don't have any other covers and nowhere close sells them (trust me, I looked pre-baby) What to do? I thought about using the prefolds and flats as inserts in the BG but it makes it WAY too bulky. He's in a BG right now but that won't last long...he pees very often and a lot (he nurses very frequently still)

I do want to start EC but I'm living with the ILs for the time being and am doing the "single mom" thing most of the time.

ANY advice you can offer would be great. I'm so new at this and trying not to stress out.

TIA

go to nickisdiapers.com or abbyslane.com or even better click on the MDC mommas cloth diaper businesses in the signatures to find covers.....Thirsties and Bummis are the most popular it seems.

You'll need 36 flats or prefolds for 7-15 pounds and 24 flats or premium prefolds for 15-30 lbs, a few toddler size are nice for nights.

6 small covers
4 medium
4 large (hold off - may potty train first...)

Re: the inserts - I don't know anything about Bum Genius - but here's a link to their diaper doublers:

I prefer flats/prefolds and wool covers or Thirsties/Bummis when I'm out and about. But cloth diaper websites will sell inserts. If you didn't prep your Bum Genius - they won't be fully absorbent yet....

There are lots of options, Mama, and I get that it can be overwhelming. People like the different styles of diapers for different reasons.

How often do you plan to wash? For every 2 days, you'll want between 24-36 dipes. Infant prefolds would probably still be the best size, depending on your son's size, and I'd want 6 covers. If you are thinking to EC, you might consider just buying what you need for now, then wait and see.

If you've considered pockets or fitteds, I often recommend to try several brands/styles to see what you like best. When I first started cd'ing, I bought 4 different brands of pockets, and a day's worth of prefolds with 2 covers. As it turns out, I like fitteds best of all!

My fave pocket is TinyTush Elite. I like Thirsties covers. Sugar Peas fitteds work well for us. But there are a million different opinions.

For covers I like the Bummis, Blueberry and Thirsties, you can get 4-5 to start and always get more. Also, I like the velcro to the snaps. I really like the Bum Genius 3.0 for nighttime and going out. We really like the Bum Genius. I have 5-6 covers for DD current cover size, 12 Bum Genius, a dozen cloth wipes, diaper area spray, 1 pack of liners (that we will never use up completely), 3 dozen pre-folds because my mom keeps her during the day, a diaper pail (from Lowe's), 2 diaper pail liners and a wet bag for going out (or you can use a plastic bag). I got premium pre-folds at first but it took forever for DD to grow into them. I'd get the infant and the standard pre-folds. As for advice, just go for it! And so what if it looks a little bulky, it's addorable. Get a few items to start and with free shipping you can always get more. Everyone I know who does it actually loves it. It's the only laundry I don't mind doing, even my hubby is cool with it. If your ILs see your enthusiasum, they should be willing to help out a bit with the laundry. Also, until your baby is eating solids and is exclusively breastfed you can throw in the entire diaper, poo and all. It washes right out in 2 cycles. The sun will get out any stains, but we rarely had any. Old school to to soak the diapers but that is way unnessacary and extra work.

http://abbyslane.com/ has free shipping
http://www.cottonbabies.com/ has a wide selection and the cheapest pre-folds
http://diaperpin.com/home.asp is a good resource and sales info
