First sewing macine suggestions

ETA~ Sewing Machine I mean!!! I should have proofread my post!

I've only sewed a few times back in Grade 8...and can't remember how...but I would like to start!

I am hoping to make quilts, and maybe a fabric book for baby (unless you do that by hand?), an apron, and mend/hem clothes.

What do you look for in a good sewing machine? How many "built-in stitches" and accessories do you need?

Thanks

patternreview.com has great information and very helpful forums.

I ended up choosing a Janome Heart Truth 2008 last year. It was about $350, which was a bit more than I had thought I'd spend, but it had wonderful reviews, is capable of sewing everything I can currently sew and want to sew in the future and the brand has a great reputation for products that last.

Consumer Reports recently reviewed sewing machines. I think they liked a $300 ish Kenmore. I would opt for a non-computerized machine with fewer built-in stitches. You really just need a good straight and zig zag to do 99% of home sewing. I do kind of wish mine did automatic buttonholes. For quilting, you'll want a quilting foot, but if the machine doesn't come with one, you can get one for about $15.

If you're interested in vintage machines, you can get a very good one for less than $200. Much, much less if you spend time at thrift stores and garage sales.
