Pruning zucchini

I'm cutting my zucchini plants cause they're too big and I want more fruit growth. This whole paragraph confuses me on how to cut it. Does the base mean cutting it closest to the dirt or closest to the leaf. And then it says not to cut the stem but what the hell do they think the leaf is on? Now I'm worried that I totally did it wrong. Ugh.

When pruning zucchini plant leaves, take care not to cut all the leaves off. Keep some leaves on the stem, including leaf nodes near the last fruit you want to keep. When cutting leaves to give zucchini more sun, just cut the bigger ones, and make the cuts close to the base of the plant, leaving all others. You can also cut off any dead or brown leaves that may be present. Do not cut any stems, as this will increase the risk for disease

I have never heard of pruning zucchini. They are extremely prolific without any help. It just seems like asking for disease.

Sitting here waiting to see what others have to say on this. Very interesting!

I know & now I'm scared to bits! I read in a few places online that you can prune them to help allow the sun in, etc. Then I read that you don't need to. Eeek! I hope I didn't just kill them all Grrrrr. (This is my 1st time w/ veggies, can you tell? )

Zucchini plants only produce new zuc's on new growth at the end of the stem, so pruning the old leaves frurther back on the stem won't encourage new growth.

If you prune off the old leaves your plants will likely still survive though. I removed quite a few leaves when I let some powdery mildew get away from me. It still continued to grow and fruit for a bumper crop.
