Is there really no hope for us with the fire ants?

We have fire ants everywhere in our yard. It has gotten to the point that I no longer go outside to work/play in the garden because every time we've been out recently the baby has gotten bitten.

DH is adamant that there is nothing we can do to get rid of them. His criteria (and mine too) are that anything we do is 1. safe around the kids and 2. environmentally friendly.

Is that really true that we have no options? I try to find stuff online about it, but it is hard to determine what really works to eliminate the ants and what is actually safe (for kids and the environment). I'm starting to feel like a prisoner in my own home...

Does anyone have ANY suggestions? Thoughts?

sweet and low works really well....and we've had alot of success recently with pouring boiling water on the areas where the ants are. we don't have the true fire ants like we did when we lived on a farm, but these are very similar and bite the heck out of us! with the boiling water, you have to keep it up for the day and we've found the ants either die or move away...most usually die though...

with the sweet and low, sprinkle it heavily over the hills and areas you see the ants. they carry it back to the nest and it kills them...makes you want to add a big spoonful to your ice tea huh?

good luck!!!
