Probiotic foods for infants

I'm posting this here instead of health and Healing because I'm hoping for a TF approach instead of just a supplement approach.

With my first DS, I was Strep + while pregnant. Highly colonized Strep +, and we opted to do a hibicleanse (topical antimicrobial douche) during labor instead of the standard IV antibiotic. This was not at all surprising that I was strep +, as I was then being treated (via diet) for Leaky Gut Syndrome (huge yeast overgrowth). DS (now 2) is now on the GAPS diet for Leaky Gut Syndrome as well - while I know the hibicleanse didn't cause it, I know it didn't help, as it wiped out any good bacteria he might have gotten in the birth canal. I'm now pg with #2, LGS cured, and doing everything I can to ensure I'm not strep + this time around (saurkraut, beet kvass, raw milk and yogurt, kombucha, cranberry, garlic, bee propolis....the list goes on and on). If I am Strep + again, I'm not sure my husband and I are going to be comfortable doing nothing - I've been so highly colonized in the past that I'm certain our risk of meningitis is higher than the average 1%, though my health is so much better now. Soooo.....if we do need to do the hibicleanse during labor, I'm thinking I would start baby on probiotics right away. This will also help with when I need surgery (injury from recent car accident) when baby is a couple of months old and I need to have an antibiotic IV about an hour before surgery. I'm so anxious about being preventative here, as so far both me and DS have had to be treated for leaky gut syndrome ad it has been a nightmare for both of us. I'd do anything to help this little one avoid having a microflora imbalance. Any advice about how to approach this with an infant? What probiotic foods I can be giving her or him if these things come to pass?

Are you talking about probiotic foods after the baby starts solids?

It's difficult to find dairy-free infant probiotics. I might use kefir grains to culture pumped breastmilk. If you are talking about an older infant, I think that okra pods are easy for babies to gum and get the insides out and cabbage is easy for them to take small bites after then get a couple of teeth.

You LOs are so fortunate to have a mom taking their health seriously and getting them on the path to healing! It took me 25 years of chronic illness to find this path.

Are you dairy free? I think that CountryLife makes a baby acidophilous, although I don't know if it is dairy free. It dissolves fairly easily, and you can either drop a pinch inside the baby's cheek, or dissolve it in water or breastmilk.

I know Flora/Udo's Choice makes a dairy free infant probiotic.

And fwiw, my 10mo dd loves sauerkraut. Has since she first grabbed it off my plate around 7mos.

Thanks for the kudos - I feel incredibly guilty for the poor health my DS has inherited from me, and I'm trying to be grateful that we know the path to healing now. Still....it's really difficult

I'm thinking probiotics for right after the birth (if we need the hibicleanse) and after the surgery definately. I never considerred kefir-culturing breastmilk - that's brilliant!!!!

Thanks for this recommendation - I might do this too. My DS, before his diet issues really came to a head, loved saurkraut too. Still loves it, but can't digest it . He's such a good eater, it kills me to deny him these foods. He requests kale, for crying out loud, but can't yet tolerate it . Trying to be patient....But I wonder if this little babe could have some beet kvass or the juice from saukraut. I might try that and see if he or she tolerates it okay - any reason to not? These shouldn't be as gassy to an infant as their whole counterparts?

Is the kefir breast milk the broadest probiotic that I can do? Should I even bother with anything else?

Thanks so much, ladies. I'm so anxious about this...

Instead of the hibicleanse, I'd use Allimax liquid vaginally. It's the actice ingredient in garlic. The garlic should not have as dramatic effect on the good bacteria as on the bad. You have to order it online, but it's great stuff. They have a product called Pre-pro that I got for my sister when she was recovering from c. difficile. It's probiotics and allimax combined. It really worked well for her.
