Frozen pads?

Hi,
Just wondering what the frozen pads are that I hear people talk about making for post partum?
Thanks!

oh hell yes. Just sprinkle witch hazel on your pads and stick them in a bag in the freezer. For immediate postpartum, they have the cold pads that you twist to activate. Phone typing or I'd add a link, but I get my birth supplies from birthwithlove.com and they have them.

I had my daughter at the hospital and had some perineal/labial tearing. They used newborn disposable diapers (pampers "swaddlers," to be precise) and sort of tore/cut them open at the top/front, then put crushed ice inside somehow (I'd have to be looking at a diaper, I think, to remember exactly how this worked). Anyway, it left the absorbent part of the diaper to absorb blood, but kept ice on my swollen perineum/labia. It was rather nice.

The midwife I work for occasionally uses the "twist-to-activate" ice pack pads when a woman has swelling. She cautions women that icing the area too much can slow healing (by inhibiting blood flow to the tissues), but in cases where swelling is severe or a woman is particularly uncomfortable, they are very useful.

I use pp herbal bath and soak disposable pads in that and then slightly squeeze them out so they are not completely saturated. Then I flatten them and wrap them individually in aluminum foil and freeze them in a ziploc bag. They are GREAT for pp recovery! I use the pp herbal bath in my peri bottle too. You can get the herbal bath from yourwaterbirth.com cascade and in his hands

They did the ice-in-a-sposie thing for me last time at the hospital, (felt great!) but I'll have to look into some of these other ideas!

Now that I have gone to the store and found out what Witch Hazel is , what kind do you use? Alcohol free (I assume) or regular toner? Lavender? Aloe Vera? How much liquid do you pour on the pad? I've read that you then wrap them in tinfoil and put em in the freezer for the big day. Any advise from you pros would be great.

I've never used straight witch hazel but if you do definitely do not get the one with alcohol. I cannot even begin to imagine how much that may burn your girly bits if you have a tear I'd go with basic witch hazel, nothing added. I prefer the pp herbal bath soak myself though. I use witch hazel on cotton circles for wiping and hemmrhoids only.
