Can't get 14 month old to eat!

I've been having a lot of trouble getting my 14 month old daughter to eat anything. She still breastfeeds on demand and wants to breastfeed ALL. THE. TIME. It's very straining to have her always pulling on me and tugging on my shirt. I do NOT plan on weaning her any time soon.

It would be different if she was teething or didn't feel well, but this has been going on for months now and she has only just started teething again these past couple of days. She hasn't been teething before that since she was about 10 months old, I think. She just doesn't want food. She just wants to nurse.

I've tried feeding her pretty much everything. There are a few things that used to be her favorites, but she just won't touch them anymore like cereal and bananas. She also no longer likes carrots or turkey dogs (I dice everything up so she won't choke).

In an effort to get her to eat, I've been giving her things that don't exactly top my list of healthy stuff, but I've been desperate. Even these very favorite things of hers she will only eat in tiny amounts - usually no more than a tablespoon's worth and then she's done. I can do this maybe three times a day before she loses interest and just starts throwing it.

She's always been lean, but I'm worried about her not gaining weight. Other babies her age all look chunky and have lots of baby fat. She's very thin. She doesn't look skinny and she is strong and vibrant and full of healthy energy, she's just very long and lean looking to me, so that adds to my worry.

Here's what I can *sometimes* get her to eat:
-broccoli
-sweet potato
-Barbara's Cheese Puffs (natural version of Cheetos)
-Annie's Mac & Cheese
-natural turkey deli slices
-mozzarella cheese
-YoBaby yogurt
-eggs
-raisins (but they always come out undigested)
-organic strawberries from our garden
-O Organics toddler vegetable crackers (OMG I am so addicted to these!)
-teething biscuits or Baby Mum Mums (which worry me because they are made in China)

As you can see, there's not a lot of fruit on there. She gets fruit once a day to every other day when I can get it in her. She likes mostly starchy carbs which isn't great, so I've been trying to find the natural types that are fortified. She can LOAD UP on some mac and cheese, though, I'm telling you! Is it better to just start making that for her every day until she gets sick of it?

It just seems like she's eating so little to me. What to do? Any tricks I can try or should I just trust that she knows what she needs and that her body will get any additional nutrients it needs through breastmilk?

Edit: Here's a photo so you can see what I mean by "thin." She lost her little fat "bracelets" a long time ago and she has long thin legs. Any baby fat she still has is in her sweet little cheeks. She seems to act so healthy to me, though. She doesn't look skinny to anyone else, does she?

She looks perfect to me! What a cutie! A lot of kids that age don't eat much. It's not that unusual. The foods she seems to want to fill up on don't sound very healthy. I definitely would not let her fill up on mac and cheese. I wouldn't give her that at all. If she doesn't want to eat solids I wouldn't pressure her. It will probably lead to struggles and battles. Not a good thing in the long run. Just keep offering her healthy stuff, pieces of meat, cheese, eggs, fruit and veggies. I would skip the grains for now. They are really nothing more than filler. Let her eat what she wants from those things and just keep offering. At that age, if she is nursing often she should be fine.
Of course, this is assuming she is developing appropriately. Is she walking at all, making lots of sounds, playing and exploring the world around her? If not, you may want to look deeper into why she is not eating much.
I'm sure you'll get lots of moms here saying the same thing. Toddlers are infinitely picky and stuborn about food. Gotta love 'em!!

Thanks!

No, she's not walking yet. She's a late starter on that, but she did stand up all by herself for the first time today! :She's extremely active. I can't get her to sit still for more than a minute which is good. She's very alert, active, and incredibly intelligent. She never stops talking and she recognizes some letters and points to them when she sees them in books and makes the sound for them, so I know she's not slow mentally. She just isn't *quite* ready to walk yet, I guess. I'm not that worried since I know a few people who didn't walk until they were 15 months.

She sounds fine to me! It's obviously not a matter of not being able to eat, since you say there are some things she will eat. I would give her time. Let her experiment with food and try not to worry. Sounds like you're doing a great job!

She will only eat them sometimes and when that sometimes happens, it's only a tiny amount. Maybe a tablespoon full. I was only worried because other moms are telling me that their 7-8 month olds are eating 5 tablespoons of jar food three or four times a day! I can hardly believe it. My cousin's 9-month-old was eating one small and one large jar of baby food at each meal three times a day which just floored me. My baby eats maybe half a jar to a jar full of food per day. (Edit: by "jar" I mean the volume of the jar. She isn't eating any jarred baby food)

Whew! Good to know it's normal

My 14 month old has just started eating in the last few weeks. Even now, he only eats a few tablespoons of food each day. He mostly nurses. No hurry!
Every baby is different. All 4 of mine have had different eating habits. They are all healthy and happy. Trust your instincts and follow her lead!
Enjoy her - she's adorable!

That seems like alot of food for a 14 month old to be eating.
My DS did not start eating more than a few bites of anything a day until about 18 mos. DD really didn't start eating alot until my milk dried up when she was about 16 -17 mos ( pregnant with DS)
I think they will do it when they are ready.
BTW she looks just perfect.

Neither of my children was interested in eating solid foods until about 15 months. Barring any other developmental concerns, I wouldn't worry about it. She does not look too thin to me.

Try to relax, she'll get there.

Lara

ETA: It was much easier to follow my own advice with the second one
