I feel more comfotatble taking myself out of the equation. I'll go back to my cho chip cookies anecdote. They are still in the freezer. The kids know they are there (they made them). They haven't had any sugary food since they baked them.

If I were to put myself in charge of doling out sweets daily, they might see them as a bigger deal than they are. They are no bigger a deal than the vegetable soup I made yesterday that they also ate for breakfast this morning. So, instead of a little 'treat' daily, they have the cookies/whatever when they want them, when they feel like having some. Putting them in control means they don't think about it daily and when they do think about it, it's not charged with good/bad , or guilt , or habit. I prefer they have it when they desire it. When they don't desire it, they don't eat it.

Its seems unfair to take a child to an event and then not let her fully participate in it unless there are allergies or something, in which case provide an acceptable alternative and a fair warning of what to expect. If you are that worried about food additives, I would avoid such events.

I am not a fan of additives either, but I try to consider the health of the whole child. Taking her candy might be better for her body but worse for her heart. And I have seen first hand as a teacher that restricted kids totally pig out on their candy. One litte boy ate almost his whole bag of valentine treats before his mom arrived. I didn't even have a chance to stop him before he popped like 5 candy bars in his mouth. Little kids are smart, they know how to work the system.
