DD1 asked me if there are any schools that teach about farms and animals. The first thing that came to mind is 4H and I told her I would look into it. She loves animals! We do not farm though and all the kids I ever knew in high school that were involved in 4H lived on farms and showed their animals at the county fair each summer. How can you get involved? Does anyone know or is anyone's DC involved in 4H or anything similar?

We are in the process of starting up our own 4-H club. If you have at least 5 interested kids, hace someone contact your local county extension 4-H specialist and it's really pretty easy to start a new club. Otherwise, you can contact your local county extension specialist and ask about currently existing clubs and see if there's one that might suit you, and you can just join them.
I was in 4-H as a kid and had a really good experience.

we do not live on a farm and are involved in 4-H. our local 4-H has a lot of people participate that do not live on a farm. i do live in a very rural area, but i'm the only one in my group that does. my 4-H group is 45 minutes away and all other members are from the suburbs of charlotte.
we don't do as much with my group though, because we enjoy participating independently. we only do field trips with the group. as for 4-H activities, my kids are taking arts and crafts summer camp this month (only $30 a week!!!). next summer, i'll sign them up for other camps too (but i didn't feel comfortable with all-day cam or overnight camp yet). on monday night we are going to a skate party hosted by 4-H. we have also been involved in the embryology program and hatched chickens. in the fall, we'll hatch quail. our 4-H rocks & has tons of events and programs, and everything is free or dirt cheap. we really love it!!! hth.

We live in the suburbs and just finished our first year of 4H, so you definitely don't need to live on a farm. We didn't even have any pets (we just got chickens 3 months ago). Find the main 4H website and see if there is a group in your area. Here they run Sep-June, but I don't know if that is for all of them or not.

Yes, we are counting on Lizabird (above) to organize our local group!
DD is very excited about it as well. We don't live on a farm either but we do own a horse that DD rides (we board and train the horse at the barn where she rides) so I am hoping she can combine that experience with 4H.

they have these summer camps where I live as well. They usually cost anywhere from $2 to $7 per day, depending on the hours and what they are doing.
