Knotting regular fabric into a sling?

DS was huge, so we weren't able to cradle-carry much at all. And I gave my ring sling, which killed my shoulders, to a friend, and I don't really want to get it back for LO#2 (due in October).

I have a wrap thingy which is just a very large piece of non-stretchy, strong, very thin fabric with tassel fringe. It's gorgeous, and I really don't have anything to do with it, so for the first couple of weeks (assuming baby will fit) I'd rather find a way to get the right shape and knot this fabric and use it as a sling.

Are there any tutorials or guides I can find online for this sort of thing? I figure there has to be a way, because these things have been used since before rings came along.

If the fabric is long enough (about 5.5 yards), you can just use the Moby Wrap instructions. My homemade Moby was my wrap of choice for about the first 6 months of DD's life -- it worked great!

Here is a link to a no sew sling. I used these directions before I made our RS. It worked nicely other than being a bit bulky. I think we used a twin sheet. Good luck!

i a NAK so i can't find a link for you right now, but there are a couple of great youtube videos on how to tie a slip-knot with a wrap. it will allow your wrap (sounds like a rebozo) to be used more or less just like a ring sling without the rings. or, yes, you could buy rings and do a no-sew ring sling too. but a slip-knot requires no additional purchase and is super duper easy to do. once you get a good one you can just slightly loosen it to remove baby and take it off and keep it tied so you don't have to re-do the knot each time.

you can also use a short wrap to do a torso carry.

if it's long enough you can also take an extra pass around your mid-section first, so that there's even more support (basically wrap it around your waist, then take one piece over your shoulder and bring the other tail up to meet that piece and tie it in a slip knot. similar to the first carry but with an extra layer around baby for more support).

there are some great instructions also over at thebabywearer.com - search fo the COTW (carry of the week) in the forum choosing and using a wrap, and look for the ones that talk about shorties and rebozos.
