We have a small travel trailer that has a toilet built in. My DH is a bit of a germophobe , and is thrilled to not have to use the public toilets at the campground restrooms. However, the toilet uses very little water, and then needs to be flushed with some nasty chemical when we're done camping. My DH did this for the first time today - he used whatever chemicals FIL had for us to use. He said it smelled TERRIBLE (the chemicals, that is, not the sewage). Instant headache. I don't know what all was in there, but there were all sorts of warnings on the package - flush for 15 minutes if it gets in your eyes, induce vomiting if swallowed, contains formaldehyde... nasty stuff.

We do have another solution at home that does not contain formaldehyde. Unfortunately, DH forgot to bring it with us on this most recent camping trip. But this camper is new to us, so we haven't even had a chance to use that yet. My impression is that this is "less toxic" but I'm guessing that it's not going to be "non toxic" if it's strong enough to break down and sanitize sewage.

Does anyone hear know anything about what our options are with this? Any chance we could just use a boatload of vinegar?

Thanks!
