questions on application

post #1 of 4

We are filling out our application to adopt a great dane from a rescue and I have a few questions. On the application it asks what you estimate the cost of food and vaccinations will cost a year. Do they really give vax yearly or try to, and which ones? Do you give them to your dog? We dont vax or kids so I wouldnt push it for our dogs but I know the rescue requires certain things you have to maintain and I think vax is one of them. I checked on flea med and hearworm preventative so I know how much that would cost. Do you use it every month? How long would a large bag of food last a big dog like a dane? Is it safe to say I could feed a year and a half to two year dane for around $80 a month?

This website has a 'Cost to own' section;

It is also acceptable to write that you aren't sure on the application! Rescue people are there to help, so if you don't know- ask! Good Luck!

i think it is fine to say you don't know. they just want to make sure you don't have some really low unrealistic estimate. I would just call you vet and and get a quote for vaccines and such. it really is going to vary by vet and the best bet is to go ahead and line up a vet anyway and find out what his fees are.

fo0r my dogs yearly exam (heart worm test, exam, 6 months heart worm medication (we don't give it all year here), rabies, and something else was $120. he doesn't charge for puppy exams though . . . . I think her frontline (if we used it) would be about $60 for six months worth. a Dane would be a little more.

I think it is to make sure people realize how high vet bills can be, especially for a giant breed. Get a quote from your vet, or from several to let them know you looked into it. I would talk to them about not vaccinating yearly as they may be ok with it, just dont promote it. Several dane breeders I spoke with do minimal vaxing and I *think* the GDC is really pushing for the amount of vaxs given to be lowered and less frequent.
