hiccuping baby extraordinaire

I swear to god my little boy gets hiccups about 4 times a day. This seems RIDICULOUSLY extreme. hahaha, Ive read that its them swallowing amniotic fluid down the wrong pipe, and also that it's helping his lungs form muscle..
Which of these, if not both, are true?
Also, if hes constantly swallowing things down the wrong tube, does this mean he will have any problems feeding? Like colic, or anything equally awful?

First time mom question, obviously.

I've always heard that when we get hiccups it's the muscle of the sphincter at the top of the stomach spasming. That's why so many 'fixes' for the hiccups involve swallowing - you can control the spasm by controlling the sphincter and making it open and close a few times.

I have no idea how that translates to a fetus.

By the way, how would you describe the sensation of hiccups? My LO is doing SOMEthing in there that I can't quite explain, but the rhythm seems WAY to fast for hiccups. Then again, I don't know what else she'd be doing to a beat.

From what I've read, hiccups are definitely a developmental milestone for babies at this age. It doesn't hurt them like it can hurt us because there is no air in there - it would just feel like a movement or muscle spasm.

I've never read of any association between hiccups and future-feeding or gastro issues.

I find it hard to describe what hiccups feel like. They're a string of movements, more regularly spaced than kicks and punches, and in the same place. You might feel bump-bump-bump-bump rather than a big punch and then nothing for a few seconds.

My babies get them constantly- and just about everytime I'm hooked to the NST one has them LOL

Glad this thread was started. My babe gets them all the time- several times a day. It is kind of cute, and my 2 yr old loves when I let her know the baby is hiccuping, and she laughs about it.

When I was pregnant with my daughter, she got hiccups alot, and she never had colic.

DS1 got hiccups a lot when I was pregnant. He never had colic or problems feeding. I don't think there's a correlation.

my 1st had hiccups constantly. MW said it was a sign of good neurological development...and sure enough, she's been alert and sharp as a tack since birth! No reflux or eating issues of any kind.

This one is hiccuping frequently too...seems to do it most often when I'm going to bed and it keeps me up!

DS1 hiccuped ALL the time...only he started a little later than this one has...and he never had any issues with colic or anything.

Jonah is having extreme hiccups too!!! Last week at work they were so bad that I could actually see my belly pulsing with them under my dress... then he started to move around like crazy and I felt like an inside out pinata, being kicked, pushed and pulsating with hiccups! That was a little scary for a few minutes.

Its definitely lost its charm hahahah I just feel bad for him now. He clearly gets agitated by them. He starts kicking and moving around quickly.. So I know its probably annoying him...
Who knows... But you can set your watch by agitated kicks roughly 45 seconds after they start!
