i'm new to sewing. i have a pattern that is xs-l for a child. if i want to keep the pattern to make all sizes eventually, what is the best way to do that? if i cut out the small, i will cut "into" the large........does that make sense?

Trace the size you need onto tissue paper. Outline the size you need with a colored marker so you don't start tracing the wrong size half way through.

I like to use sew-in interfacing. It goes on sale for .50 cents a yard at Jo-Ann's frequently and is quite durable.

Thanks... that's a great tip.... I never thought about using that.

I also use interfacing - not the fusible kind. The stuff with the blue square grids on it. I buy it at Joann's several yards at a time and use my 40% off coupon to get it.

I trace patterns onto plastic. I keep the thick plastic bags that electrical stuff comes in or look out for thick decorators plastic sheet. If you use a sharpie it is easy to do.

Plastic is easy to pin to fabric, rolls up easily and doesn't take up much space. I roll up the patterns and slide a ring of paper round each pattern with the pattern info on it.
