why 3 pieces

Thread Starter
So my mom bought me a pattern and yarn as a graduation/mother's day present. Its a tank top that buttons down the front. Why do I have to make it in three pieces (back, left front, right front) why can't I make it one big piece (then when I get to armholes/neck shaping put some of it on a holder come back do the other side)?

I hate finishing, I always mess up the sewing, so what is the benefit of knitting it in three pieces?

the only reason I do stuff with seams is if the yarn is super drape-y or slippery and could use the stabilization of the seams

do it all the time

I'm nearly as famous for this as I am for going barefoot all the time! Of course you can knit it one piece up to the armholes! I do it all the time. If it's a form fitting garment you may want to cast on a few less stitches since you won't be taking them up in a seam but it usually doesn't matter. If you're using soft, drapey yarn consider using Elizabeth Zimmermann's trick for "fake seams"- slip one stitch where the side seams would be on every right side row- it really works!:

That's a pattern that screams for revision. I'd do it the way you're planning to (one piece to the armholes, than put part of it on a holder). I agree on the recommendations for slippy/drapey yarn.

Oh, and subtract two stitches at each side, since you won't need seam allowance.
