Right! I forgot about that, and it threw me in the other poster's post. You might be able to buy a six-pack for $7 around here, but I don't think so. I don't drink it, and dh only buys occasional packs of import and/or craft beer, so I'm not sure what the really cheap stuff costs, but I think it's about $9 a six pack. I know when dh moved here from the US, he suffered severe sticker shock when buying beer!

Oh, and I also meant to say that if dh referred to our grocery budget as "my" money, things would get ugly really fast.

I think you need to show your DH the receipts because $100 a week is not enough to buy all that he thinks you should be getting. I mean, the pet food alone is so expensive!

My dh used to complain when I spent over 100 per week until he started going with me As it stands now we average 150 per week, sometimes more, sometimes less. We don't buy a whole lot of meat. We eat dinner out Sat. nights, dh eats out for lunch Mon-Fri (how nice for him) and 2 of the kids eat school lunches. Our 150 or so includes food, paper products, cleaning products and diapers for the baby because I too have a dh who won't use cloth.

we spend between 150-200 a week for a family of five plus my daycare child m-th for b & l,+s dh for a long while would wine about the bill and how he lived sooo cheeply when he was single (um 11years ago) and 40 bucks was more than adequate blah blah blah....then one day in occured to me um 200 dollars devided by 5 people is 40 bucks once I pointed that out to him he has not mentioned it again.
so basicly you are feeding every one for 25 buck each thats GOOD. If he still thinks its too much I would challenge him to spend only 25 dollars for ALL his food the following week.

I do include cat food, litter and occational beer in my grocery budget but I have a bit more to work with

We spend that much for a family of 5 but that's just food and we certainly don't buy steak. He's being unreasonable and needs a lesson in the COL.

I just realized we spend more like $75 a week and when things are tight $50.

Wait... food AND gas for $100/wk? And he's complaining?

Does he think it is 1990?

I think hes being unreasonable.
I buy food and household essentials (cleaning solutions- DH won't use baking soda or vinager to clean with, laundry soap, dish soap, shampoo, conditioner, tooth paste etc) for around 100/week but I also recieve WIC which helps some. Without WIC it would probably be around 130-150 a week depending on how many eggs we use and how much milk.

I agree that $100/week for food only is a reasonable budget.

I think that a PPer had a great idea to sit down with your DH with the grocery receipts and ask him which items he'd suggest you cut back on. You don't have to approach him in a mean or snarky way. But have a real conversation about the cost of food and see if your DH has any ideas. Approach the problem as a team.
