sizing on cloth

I have a lot of 100% cotton flannel that I've been collecting for making trainers and diapers, and have washed all of it. The problem is that all the prints and some of the solids have some sort of sizing on them or something that makes the pee bead up and roll off rather than sink in. Is there a way of washing them differently to remove that? Thanks!

some of the flannel I have bought needed more than one wash before it would absorb very well.

Just plain laundering, but a lot of it? Okay, I'll just keep washing it, then. Thanks!

For sewing cloth diapers, I often need to strip the fabric just like I would strip stinky diapers. Wash on extra hot with a little Dawn, then rinse (I use hot!) until there are no more suds when it's agitating. I got some microfleece I had to do this on because it was repelling rather than wicking.
