Possible Infection or Not?

My son is intact and about 2.5 years old. There are times that his penis looks swollen and red. It always seems to go away. One night he had a red streak on the bottom part of his pee pee with a fever, but he had Rubella at the time. He said he scratched it on his potty seat. I looked the next morning and his pee pee looked normal.

Last night he was grabbing at his pee pee through his diaper. This morning it looked a little red and swollen. I touched it to clean it due to a rather messy diaper and he said it hurt.

Could there be a mild infection? Should his penis be red underneath the foreskin? He has retracted the foreskin a little bit before, so I checked just slightly to see if his penis was red and it was. Can I do something to help like apply probiotics to the pee pee area? What else should I do, if anything?

The area under the foreskin is supposed to be a bright red/purple like the inside of your mouth. It could be seperation if it is then it will resolve very quickly. Here is a thread you should read if you havnt already http://www.mothering.com/discussions...d.php?t=764732 it can help you decide if it is an infection or seperation and what to do to help.

This sounds like separation.

Infections will continue to get worse and the swelling will extend up the penis into the groin and there will be a fever. The penis will be like 3-4 times its normal size. Bacterial infections are actually quite rare. Yeast is much more common.

The fever your son had the other time was most likely from being sick.

That line under the penis is supposed to be red. Mild/Moderate redness, mild/moderate swelling and pain/sting are all symptoms of normal separation, not infection.

Here is another good thread you should read:
