Inexpensive covers

Does anybody know of a brand/source of inexpensive waterproof covers? Some friends of mine are adopting two orphans from Ethiopia and are taking a whole lot of items over to donate to the orphanage. They've asked for diaper covers, because right now the orphanage has to use plastic grocery bags on the babies' bottoms. I use Polar Bummis with DS, but can't afford to send many over at $17 a pop. Anybody have a suggestion so that I can afford to send more covers? We're trying to send only new items so that they will be able to get more use out of them.

Dappi pull-ons, $7 for 2 pair. Bummis whisper pants are also pretty cheap, even Gerber plastic pants would work.

Do the Dappi ones hold up over time? I saw some review for them and they weren't too favorable. I just want to make sure that whatever I send over will stand up to heavy use.

BTW, we love our Polar Bummis. We don't use them a lot because we EC (mostly for the car and outings), but they seem to breathe better than a lot of waterproof covers.

I got these and so far they are great: http://swaddlebees.com/products/newoutlet/NOS

Look for snap covers. The velcro/aplix often wears out long before the elastic or fabric does. Something like Bummis snap covers.

Used still might make more sense. There is an additional premium for new even with covers that have only been very lightly used.

Inexpensive Covers

I haven't liked any of the really inexpensive covers I've tried... Bumkins or the Bummis Whisper Pant. Although, the Bummis super snap holds up really well, and at $11 each that's a lot cheaper than the Bummis Polar.

I've seen the Gerber covers for as little as $3 for two, but I've never used them.

I wonder if one of the manufacturers might donate some seconds to the cause if you contacted them directly? It might take a bit of time to organize, but it could work.

Also, along the lines of what the PP said, how about finding a retailer that offers one of those "try it" packages and get some used ones in quantity? Pull-ons would probably be the cheapest. Good luck!

I'm contemplating contacting Bummis - I think that their wraps that snap would probably last the longest but I'm wondering if that will balance out if I could buy 5 of the Dappis for the price of one Bummis Super Snap. I'm hoping that even if I can't get some covers donated that maybe I will be able to purchase some wholesale or something. I did find that clothdiaper.com has prefold seconds for cheap - I'm going to order a few dozen of those because they need diapers, too.

... though, it appears that my little nudist would prefer that I donate all of his diaper covers - as I am looking on the internet for covers, he's stripping and refastening his diaper on the invisible baby in the room. I guess that's what I get for putting a cover on him at home!

Thanks for those of you who gave me suggestions - I just wanted to let you know that the folks at Bummi's are just awesome. I e-mailed them to see if they maybe wanted to donate a few, but mostly was asking to see if they could give me a bulk discount. They sent a whole big bunch of 2nds for free and my friends should be boarding a plane this afternoon to take them over to Ethiopia. They are carrying enough covers (thanks to Bummis) to have at least 2-3 covers per baby in the orphanage! :

Well, that settles it for me - Bummis are part of my newborn stash. :

That is awesome. Those are the majority of covers that I have, but I know for sure those are what I am going to buy more of in the future.

go bummis!

That is so great! And their products are wonderful so I'll bet the orphanage will be excited to have them.

Sounds like you're set now, but I was going to chime in and say proraps are cheap (like, what, $7 for a new one?) and they seem like they'd hold forever. I have 1, would have bought more but they didn't fit right on my baby.

OP, that's wonderful!!! It's great that therer are still companies like that around.
Not relevant for the OP but we have some of the old fashioned plastic pants (not sure if they are Dappi or Gerber) and we got them used and the elastic is still holding up just fine. I find them fairly easy to use- easier than wraps. You never have to worry about parts of the diaper sticking out fo the cover.

Awesome! Go Bummis!
