Tomatillos!

I didn't like the arugula, then my spinach got buggy, and the lettuce didn't come up, so I had a big patch in my community garden plot to fill. I couldn't decide what to plant and finally remembered that I hadn't planted tomatillos. Perfect! So I went today, and tried to buy some, but no one had any, I gave up. Then went to the gardens. My sister was with me, she has two garden plots next to mine.

After watering, I was looking at the plants and saw the volunteer sunflowers in her plot. Looked closer, and one of them had a little yellow flower. It was not a sunflower, it was a tomatillo plant! She had 5 more. A week or so ago, she asked me what those plants were, and I thought they looked like sunflowers, and told her that's what they were.

She gave me three of them, and she has three left. Man, that's gonna be a lot of salsa!

I have 12 tomatillo plants!! I love the things, I honestly do! I can strait up tomatillos like I would whole tomatoes and use them in soups and pureed over chicken with chiles in the crockpot. I'm also planning to give salsa baskets this year for christmas, so I need a ton. Okay, technically I'm sharing my garden with my neighbor, so really I only have six plants... but still. Lots of tomatillo love! : Mine are finally looking quite vigorous. I sowed half of them directly in the garden and they took FOREVER to sprout, but we're on a roll now.

I planted tomatillos 5 years ago and haven't had to plant them since. They grow like weeds all over the garden. I've probably pulled out 20-30 plants because I simply don't need that many and needed to make room for other vegetables! I froze a bunch last year and it was wonderful for soups and chili verde all winter:.

(I found I didn't much care for arugula either. And I have a lot of seeds left over.)
