stinky!!

Thread Starter
my son's diapers stink. really, really stink. at first we thought it was something wrong with his pee, but we figured out it's just with the Pure Beginnings OS fitted diapers he wears, not with prefolds or disposables. We do a cold water rinse before each wash, and we wash with 7th gen fragrance-free detergent in a HE front-loader. the smell is really skunky and offensive. help!

eta: he is almost 6 mos and nearly exclusively breast fed/ebm (he has had bananas two or three times), and the smell is only with urine, not with bm.

You could try washing with hotter water, washing fewer diapers in a load, washing with more detergent and adding extra extra rinses at the end, or switching detergents.

Juliacat gave you an excellent summary! Ditto that.

I'm one to try extra hot rinses. Could be too much or not enough detergent, but I would first try rinsing more (I think hot is much more effective).

If that's the only dipe and your others are fine, I tend to think maybe they just aren't getting clean through all the layers???

If nothing else works, you might try boiling them...

Are they becoming less absorbent as well? That could be a sign of detergent build up. You might need to strip them as the poster above described. Basically, do one regular wash and then do an extra rinse on the hottest setting you can attempt. Finally, keep rinsing until their are no more suds in the water. Then dry as usual.

I have also heard people have success with Bac-Out. Have not tried myself. The one caution is that it contains natural enzymes and so might pose an irritant to the baby. Rinse well.

Good luck.
