My then-4-year-old stepdaughter reacted with a full-on meltdown after being asked with redirection, then told, not to lick us. She was trying to do it in full dog-slobbery way and it was really gross. (We didn't use "that's gross" language or shame--we just said we didn't like the way it felt and could she please stop.)

"But NOW I DON'T HAVE ANYONE TO LICK."

"You may lick yourself."

"But that's not FUN. And not FAIR. I want my MAMA." Complete collapse, crumpled in the chair, bawling. (I don't remember exactly what was up--tired, hungry, actually wanting Mama, what--but I do remember the fit. Her mom later told us she wouldn't let her do the dog lick to her, either.)

So, as not to get her started, no licking in this house. (Not that I as stepmom would necessarily do it anyway.)

Ha! I just did this a couple of days ago! We were at an indoor water park and took a break to have a snack of Clif Bars and fruit. It was either lick the chocolate off of his fingers or wipe it on our towels, so I chose licking.

For the record, I have no problem licking (relatively clean) hands, but it would never have occurred to me to lick DS's face, and thinking about it now, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't.

My daughter was several years old before she had chocolate. By that time, she probably would have objected to me licking her, and I just don't think I'd be that hungry.

I've done it!

i voted other.

because its an age thing.

did it when dd was a baby. younger.

now she just licks them herself (round the lips) or wipes with a napkin. i think at 6 i am grossed out at licking from my dd - esp. who still v. much lives in burp and fart land.

ETA - ewwww i was slobbered on for quite a few years by our 'dog'. : one day thankfully it stopped. unless she is in a silly mood and comes over to do it because she knows i hate it.

I mean, I wouldn't lick them if they were caked in dog doo or something genuinely nasty, but just food and maybe the odd bit of saliva or garden soil? Yeah, sure. Although my first line of defense would probably be to spit into a cloth and use that, or lick my finger and do that. Direct licking would be reserved for something yummy. Like chocolate, I suppose.

For the record, I am one of those people who really doesn't mind stuff like that. I'll gladly wipe my kids noses with my hand and then wipe it on my jeans. I'll also happily pick my nose or pick theirs for them, although I generally avoid doing it in front of people who might be offended, just so as not to be rude. But it doesn't bother me. So I'm probably not a good example... Here I am, skewing another poll with my fringe opinions.
WE must be kindered spirits. I was starting to feel like the black sheep here. I do the same nose wiping, then wipe on my own pants ALL.THE.TIME. They are my kids, and they have those bodily fluids because i MADE them. lol Thats how I see it anyway. With my own children, it just doesnt bother me. Someone elses is a WHOLE different story.

When I lick my kids lips they think it is absolutly hysterical. Maybe behaviorally, its not the best thing to teach them, but its better then what they will learn on the school bus someday................

The nose wiping does not bother me and I'm an anti-licker.

I hold my tongue to much higher standards than my hands!

But I'd be more likely to use the inside of my t-shirt hem than my hands for noses. Does a better job and I change t-shirts more often than jeans.

Wow - I'm normally shameless in the ways I'd go about getting chocolate. But my germaphobia prevents me from licking my kids!!

I do not lick, ever! I do not like to be licked and I would never model this behavior.

I am always willing to wipe a nose with my shirt tail.

I taught all of my children how to use friction to clean their hands and faces. Rub the face, rub the hands together until they are clean. Repeat.

Normally I would say that I am very "anti-lick cleaning", but when dieting I could very easily be swayed to clean chocolate from the kiddo's fingers by licking...assuming I actually witness the mess in the making, otherwise I would be highly skeptical and wouldn't go near it without soap

Sounds like good baby eating to me!

Pre-child, the thought of licking a child for any reason NEVER would have crossed my mind.

Post-child, I lick DS's face. I can't help myself when he is all ice creamy or chocolate-ty.

I have always told DS that he "is good baby eating" because he is so sweet. Pretending to eat him all up is a regular game.

So when is a gooey, sweet messy, I tell him to come on over and let me eat your face. (only when I know he is clean before hand, I wouldn't lick a face covered in dirt and chocolate.)

I confess that the thought gags me.

I will admit to picking their noses while they sleep, or scratching the cradle cap gunk off, but licking spitty food off the face? Ew.

Okay I have to go put happy thoughts in my head. Ewwwww.

I voted Other because I'll wipe it with my finger then lick that, but upon reflection, yes, I do believe I have and would lick yummy things like chocolate off my (hopefully clean) children.

My kids are at the age where they play with spit bubbles now and then. I don't lick spit, no matter WHAT is mixed in with it that may be tasty nummy goodness!

I chose other. Right now it grosses me out because I'm pregnant and everything grosses me out. Post baby, I very well might lick chocolate off of either child.
