We live in Avondale Estates, and I'd highly recommend Decatur and the surrounding area - depending what you want to do for schools.

Grant Park is awesome too! And East Atlanta Village. A bit west of Decatur (closer to the actual Atlanta downtown), right by the biggest green space in the city, some townhomes and lots of SFH in a walkable area. And a really awesome parent's network. Schools are ok; there's a charter school that's awesome.

We lived in Avondale when the kids were tiny. I love the community there. But the local school is terrible. Everyone drives their kids "away" to school each day.
