Need help what can I plant now! So excited!

I got in! I got in to my community garden. My DH is the president of our community association and I sort of used him to talk the head of the community garden in to calling the people who haven't worked thier plots yet to see if they would give it up! yay I got one and I could have two but I am a novice so one 30 x 35 plot is good enough.

Questions, Questions

I have tomatoes, corn, pole beans, bush beans, potatoes, onions and carrots right now. What else can I grow from seed that will grow in time? I am zone 3.

I would like to add a few squash, zuchini, red cabbage, and peas. Will they grow for me?

I was also wondering if anyone in zone 3 has ever tried to grow sweet potatoes or yams in this cold of a climate.

Thanks:

I'd say start some of the cold weather veggies that take awhile to grow. Butternut squash and spaghetti squash take a few months and will survive the cold weather well. You can also try brussels sprouts, broccoli, or cauliflower. Kale you might need to wait a bit on, depending on the summer temps of your area. I think it depends on the variety but I read that it needs a frost to start getting really sweet. Also radishes love the cooler weather and they grow really fast.

The cabbage and peas would probably be fine but I don't know about the summer squash started this late. What are the temps like in three or so months? Will you be gearing up for your first frost at that point or will it still be in the 70s during the day? I *think* if you're still getting warmer temps during the day and not too cold at night the summer squash will still grow for you.

Thanks!

I never thought about kale,I will have to go get some seed.

I bought some corn seed today and I contemplated some zuchinni. I think I mught buy a squash seedling and I am toying with buying a few more tomato varieties.

I went to my plot today and it is over run with weeds but seems to have some spinach growing in it. If it isn't spinach I just ate some miscelaneous green stuff off the ground. I wonder if I can dig up that spinach and move it to my home garden bed?

Here is a link to a garden calculator

http://www.chestnut-sw.com/growform.htm

- put in your first frost free date and the first fall date and choose if it is a spring garden or fall. It will tell you what you should be trying to do in your gareden - planting seeds, starting indoors and so on. I do the official dates plus earlier for spring frost and later for fall. It gives a good span. The fall one is good to play with by a week as usually the first frost is followed by several days, if not weeks, of frost free nights and with a bit of cover plants can keep growing.
