Remedial Wipes Question

Thread Starter
Hi folks.

I'm planning to use mostly cloth wipes.. but I have a question about moistening the wipes. Do you use just warm water? A spray bottle? A solution? Something commercial? And, what about at night when any warm water might well have turned cold?

I know these are very basic, probably stupid questions, but I'd appreciate feedback. I had thought that I might use disposable wipes when I'm out and about... Thoughts?

You can pretty much do any of the above -- whatever works for you. Some peoplel have wipe warmers that work with cloth wipes, others use a squirt bottle. I live in florida, so the cold water wasn't a problem with us -- so for a while we just kept a basin of water with some wipes in it and i changed the water a couple of times a day.

As far as a solution -- that also depends on you and your baby. We tried the plain water route and ended up with a wipes soultion. My favorite is northern essence foaming wipes solution. My daughter seemed to get a rash with just plain water and did better with a wipes solution. I have heard people say the same thing...and on the other hand, i've also heard people say that their DC got a rash with anything but plain water.
So this is one of those things that depends on what you feel like is best and what works best for your baby's bum.

They're good questions!

I've generally used plain tap water to wet the cloth wipes. I'd usually just grab a couple before I changed my daughter, wet them, and then just toss them in the diaper pail when we were done. We've done a few sprays, but tap water works just as well for us. It's easy, and the price is right.

I didn't use warm water, so maybe my kids didn't know what they were missing. At night I'd still just use tap water, unless it was very very cold, in which case I'd run the warm water for a minute to at least bring it up to room temperature.

When out and about, you can put some wet cloth wipes in a zipper bag and use them as needed. When they're dirty, just toss them in your wetbag with the dirty diapers and wash everything together. I found that cloth wipes were nice because I didn't have to worry about pulling them out and throwing them away before I did diaper laundry.

Good luck, and have fun!

We are still waiting on our baby to get here, but my current setup is this: I have a spray bottle with witch hazel mixed with the Kissaluvs Diaper Potion and also a second spray bottle with just water ready to go under the changing table. I think for me, being a first time momma and new to CDs, it might be easier to have the water already there in the bottle versus going to the bathroom faucet, especially if the baby is crying and I am trying to hurry.

I have our wipes in a wipes warmer. We get them wet with warm water in the sink, ring them out, and keep them in the warmer. Then I spray her bum with the kissaluvs wipes solution and use one of the warm wipes to clean her up. I bought the kissaluvs concentrate and just make up a batch in a spray bottle as needed... I use just plain tap water instead of the witch hazel or distilled water with the solution. It works well for us.

I just wet them at the sink when I need them. If I am going to be out and away from a sink, I bring a little bottle of water to pour on the wipes right before I use them.

I use an old disposible wipes container, and keep a handful of wipes in there. Then, i keep homemade solution in an old pop bottle. I use about 2 t baby wash (currently use Dr. Bronner but will switch to Angel Baby when Dr. B is gone), 1-2 t oil, then fill the bottle up with warm water. Then I wet the wipes as I need them. I've never warmed them, and my ds only occasionally complains. I did by a wipes warmer for #2 (due Aug), but haven't tried it yet...

Like the PP's have said, you can use any combination of what you would like and what works best for you. I use a wipes warmer and maybe one drop of tea tree oil. I think my son has become very accustomed to warm wipes and when my previously used wipes warmer broke, he was none too happy about having tap water rinsed wipes But you can really use any of the options you mentioned!

I also just wet them in the sink as I need them. Have for the past 5 yrs and can't complain. For outings, I will sometimes pre-wet them and put them in something water-proof.

I also just moisten a wipe (or two) in the sink, as needed. I do the same when out and about. Sometimes, I use the California Baby Non-Burning & Calming Diaper Area Wash...it smells so yummy! When DD was a babe, it seemed to irritate her bum. So, I used the rest of it on my face.... It doesn't irritate her bum, as a toddler (and, I still use it on my face!).
