Newbie questions - gophers and pruning

I've been working in the yard a LOT this week. I'm trying to clear this shady area in my front yard that borders our driveway. I'm also trying to restore some grass that borders that and spruce up a flower bed. There is a rose bush and I am looking for some resources on rose bush care. It's the only plant I'm salvaging in the shady area besides a little bushy ground cover. Most of the roses have already bloomed so is it time to prune? There are lots of dead/dying/browned stems that are just there... should i prune those?

I also have some cilantro growing in my flower bed. It's grown real tall and has flowers on it now. Does that mean it has "gone to seed?" Are there seeds in the flowers? I would love to harvest some of the seeds and try to plant my own. This was store bought plants of cilantro.

We also have a severe gopher problem and one mole in my flower bed. My husband shot about 9 gophers in our backyard last weekend. I had sprayed mole max in the flower bed and in my patch of grass I'm trying to restore but now I have gophers back. I don't think the mole max works. I was told I only had to spray it at the beginning of every season, but apparently it didn't work. When I tell others I sprayed this stuff, they chuckle and say I have use poison or kill them. I'm not big on poison because I have two small kids and a dog.

Any advice or resources would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!!

The only-only-only way is to use gopher traps which does kill them. Every other product is a huge waste of money.

Im having the same problem with gophers. Im going to look into several black box traps. it seemed that they have decided to make our backyard their home: I dont want to use poison as several neighbors have done this and has ended up killing several owls which I think is making the problem worse because they LOVED eating the gophers.
