My kids always have sand in their shoes when they get home from school. But, we live in the desert and have dirt roads so it comes from them walking from the bus stop to the front door. They almost always stop and empty them outside before putting them under the shoe bench. If they forget it's not the end of the world because I vacuum the entryway tile daily. On a windy day, dirt/sand comes in under the door anyway.
