Baby names? - Page 5

I, too, am impressed that anybody has a name yet. First of all, we FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT when it comes to names. It's really upsetting. I get attached to all sorts of names and make lists and dh nixes them one by one in a totally cold and dismissive way. I have been through this with 3 children now (my m/c was a weird circumstance, something kept telling me I needed a name...and FAST!!!) and every time I ask him to please keep the nasty comments to himself and be gentle about it, but he just can't do it!

He's an AMAZING man and I"m so lucky I snagged him, but that is one of my pet peeves.

Anyway, one of the reasons this is so hard is because our criteria for names is as follows:

Must sound good in English
Must sound good in Hebrew (dh is Israeli and I am Israeli American)
Must be very unique
Must have a specific Hebrew meaning (thus far, we've combined words in Hebrew to make a meaningful and original name)
Must describe the child (using our vibes from the baby during pregnancy...and then confirmed upon meeting the child)

Our dd's name means, in English "G-d's Heart" and her middle name means "sheep" (named after my grandmother). Her first name also is related to the word for a lioness. And only after we named her did we learn that Lioness/Sheep is a throw back to the biblical account of how the world will be when there is complete peace, often translated as the "wolf laying down with the sheep". This describes dd to a "t".

ds's name means "My G-d's People" and his second name is "The Sun". It actually forms the sentence "My G-d's people are the Sun" if taken all together. It's both gentle and strong, just like him.

Anyways, I have NO idea what we will do. I have a name that I LOOOOVE that I just haven't even been able to get dh on board with. It's a nature/place name for a boy and I even tried to give it to my best friend, who considered it, but didn't use it. I also have a name for a girl that I have liked for about 12 years (well before I met dh) but the meaning in Hebrew just doesn't hold any significance for us. So, I have no idea what we will do.

DH wants to find out gender. I don't know how I feel about that. But if we do, that should make things quite a bit easier for us.

i have no idea yet. i had a tough time agreeing with my ex, and i think it will be more difficult with my boyfriend. i secretly hate what he chose for his daughter-- shhh!
i don't have any ideas, and we won't be finding out the gender-- mike wants to, but after having a surprise with #2... i would never trade that amazing, magical moment back to hearing it halfway through my pregnancy from a stranger. no way, no how.
in time, once we're a bit more "sure" that this baby is coming, we will talk names. i only like traditional-sounding names, hehe-- one of the ONLY traditional things about me. and girl names are so much easier! i am thinking pink (though i always wanted to raise another little boy!) but, my instincts have been wrong for both of my kids, in the past. 7 months, and we'll see though, right?
obviously my daughter was named after she was born. her middle name is after my grandma (and her mom, daughter and granddaughter--- my grandma is 87 and my best friend). my son, we did find out the sex at 20 weeks. he shares his father's first name, and we decided to use michael for his middle name. we both have brothers with the name, and would have used it for a first, had that not been the case (my kids have four uncle Mikes now, plus my boyfriend, lol)... we chose that sometime during the middle of that pregnancy.

I'm really stuck on the name Grayson for a boy. However I don't like that spelling.

Maybe more like: Gracian

What do you think?

As for a girl I really like Gracelyn

So here's my list.

Gracelyn Noelle
Gracelyn Abigail
Gracelyn Chloe

Gracian Daniel
Gracian Miles
Gracian Michael
I know a boy named Gracen, pronounces like Grayson. His dad's name is Grey.

I would pronounce "Gracian" like Gray-shun.

We have had a boy's name picked out since #1

Robert John, "Jack" for short

I have my heart set on Seraphina for a girl, no idea on a middle name. Not sure DH is on board with it yet.

We have typically used family names for middle names. Our first dd has a popular middle name from my family, dd2 has MIL's name for her middle name (and yes, MIL totally gloats over that one). I didn't want that so much, but it was the only way to get the first name I wanted.

If we continued a family naming trend, we could look at Lilian or Helen for a middle name, but I'm not sure how I like either of those.

I love picking out names. The chinese gender predictor says this one will be another girl, I'm all for it. No need to get new clothes that way!

We've basically had a girl's name picked out since first pg.

Natalie Rose

although I've been leaning more and more towards

Anna Rose

Boys name is still so up in the air.

We have 3 choices for a middle name:

James
Allen
Stephen

But everything for a first name that I like DH shoots down and he won't give me anything. The two I still have on my list that he hasn't crossed off are:

Patrick
Joshua

If we have a boy it will be Julian Joseph, both family names from my dad's side.

Julian: Grandfather's and my Dad's name
Joseph: The name of my dad's brother who died as an infant

If we have a girl, we have a V tradition in my family. My mom's maiden name is Valencia. I am Vanessa Valerie and my lil sis is Veronica. My DD is Vida. I am thinking Victoria but we would call her Tori for short (my favorite singer). I could also see Valentina.

Both boys middle names mean "son of the redheaded man", so we want to stick to a "red" theme there, if we can. Ross is my top fave middle name, tho Hubby has a hard time getting over the David Schwimmer reference.

If we get a girl... we like Mary or Rose. Mary Kate has been our top fave since pre-children, but Hubby is thinking he wants a little Rosie!

edit to add: we don't tell anyone our names until they are born... except maybe online here

wow we have 2 presidents too , well kind of
my first ds is John Kennedy and my second ds is Robert (not Kennedy though, but still)
I love love the name Rose, maybe will be for a girl for a middle name....

well lets see, dh has picked all the first names.....and I the middle names....our first is Alexandria (after Alexander the great) Dawn (after my Mom who is deceased, her name was Alba (spanish) so I translated it to Dawn

Our first ds is John Kennedy (he picked both) lol, no explanation necessary on that one

my 2nd dd is Jennifer (dh just had this thing with that name saying all jennifers are pretty blah blah) and I picked Lee (dh's middle name is Lee)....i call her Jenny

My last is Robert Alexander , robert after the Kennedys and Alexander just because we liked it....

Now.......dh already has picked out the girl's name....Isabella......I don't know what i'd call her....I like the name but I also like Celeste.....

Boy ....we have no clue...I like Thomas (Tommy) after dh's brother who is deceased....but dh is against it...he told me today that maybe Peter Sextus
what???? I don't know but he has come up with some names in the past that have thankfully never materialized...Tyberius (our dog is named that so hopefully he had his name filled that way lol)....Polycarp.....ugh I don';t know how he thinks those up....I am so thankful for John and Robert after all these lol

Sounds like your DH is a history buff. You can put your foot down and say "no" to the bizarre names. My DH has a freaky name I told him he can bestow it upon our 20th son, seeing as we have 2 daughters, I'm not too worried about it being used.

"Isabella Celeste" or "Celeste Isabella" are wonderful combinations. You could shorten Isabella to Bella, which means beautiful. Can't go wrong there.

I think Celeste is lovely. I've been really liking it lately, for some reason. Isabella Celeste would be nice, though I think Celeste would go well in the first name spot too.

lol yes he is a history buff , he also majored in theology in college so names like Epiphenus (sp?) and Constantine , Augustus, etc have circulated ....although I do have an uncle named Augusto....but anyway, yes Bella sounds pretty, wasn't sure about Isa.....
thanks!

We do Biblical first names and family names for middle names, and I have a huge list of possible boy names, but a small pitiful little list of possible girl names. And of course, dh has "vetoed" prolly 3/4 of the names from each list!

Apparently he doesn't like "s" names for boys, because I have had Silas and Seth at the top of the boys list since I was expecting our first (m/c) 9 years ago, but he vehemently vetoed both of them! And he was less than enthusiastic about Samuel or Simeon, although he allowed that he would "consider" them. So I give up, even though I adore the name Silas and am jealous of all you who have reasonable DPs who like it, too!

Right now I've got my heart set on Theophilus for a boy--we'd call him Theo, and I just can't think of anything in the world more adorable than that! Dh finally said the other day that it's "sorta growing on him" so I may have won that battle if the little bean decides to be born with a penis!

For a girl, I'm pretty clueless, although I really like Talitha Lucille. Lucille was my gma's name. Dh isn't super crazy about Talitha yet, and my dearest best friend recently had a miscarriage...her little girl would have been Lucy. So I'm not sure yet if I can go there....kwim? We'll see....

A couple other possibilities on the girl list are Chloe, Berea, Hosanna, and Phoebe. Although my very favorite girl name is......wait for it.....

Dorcas.

Yep, really. I love it. I know what you are most likely thinking....nobody else likes it either, and dh has utterly vetoed it, so I'll just go pout in my little corner... :

Sorry, but Seven Brides for Seven Brothers was my FAVORITE musical when I was little! And please, someone back me up here: if you could get rid of the "dork" association, wouldn't it be the CUTEST name???

I'm beginning to seriously develop a liking for "Henry". I think the clincher, after already deciding I liked it, was seeing today that Seal and Heidi Klum have a "Henry" (hardly a strong argument LOL).

But if we have a boy, there is a very strong likelihood that he will be on the nerdier side, in body type if not in personality, although if he takes after my side, it'll be personality too. This doesn't worry me (I am a nerd, I come from nerds...) but I don't want to lumber him with a stereotypically "nerdy" name if he does inherit those characteristics.

So... is Henry a nerdy name? I can't decide...

(Similarly, although both DH and I really like the sound of the name Angus, the fact that DH is 5'4, and short and slight boys run on that side of the family... I'm not sure Angus would fit LOL)

It's pretty much just prounounced "dork-us". Which is the problem.

I prefer to pronounce it more "door-cass", which is only a very subtle difference (emphasis still on the first syllable).

In the New Testament (Acts 9:36-41) Dorcas was miraculously raised from the dead by the Apostle Peter. Her name was Greek...in Hebrew, I believe she was called Tabitha.

So, yeah....I really do love the name, but I realize it ain't gonna happen! I guess I could console myself with a pet cat....or goldfish... :P

Perdita, I LOVE Henry! So cute! I have a friend whose little boy is named Henry, and they call him Hank!
I know a lady named Dorcas She's a beautiful, very classy lady. I just talked with her yesterday (btw, it's pronounced "DORE-kuss" .. at least with her!)

And.. Henry is my most favorite boy's name! Not sure if dh is quite as in love with it as I am... Elias is my next favorite.
I wouldn't call him Hank (not a great family history with that name) but "Harry" is also a diminutive of Henry - and I LOVE Harry. In fact, we could just GO with Harry LOL.
