My 6 yr. old gets stinky armpits sometimes, too. I just have him take a bath with soap when I notice it.

My mom says that I was like that. I'd go outside to play even for a short while and come back smelling like a man who'd just finished a basketball game or something. Don't know why. Needless to say, I took a lot of baths as a kid.

Yeah, mind did and still does. It seems too young, but oh well.

I believe that the strong, really bad stink that you get on your feet or arm pits is the result of the type of bacteria living there.

Whenever I notice my armpits developing that smell I use some alcohol, and wipe my pits after a shower. DH has done this, and both DH and DD have needed to do it on their feet.

It's worked like a charm in our house.

It might be something worth trying. I know I would not want to insist on deodorant for someone so little.

aaaah thank you to all you mama's for bringing me peace of mind.

and thanks you AbbieB for reminding me of the alcohol. i had forgotten about it. however she is so ticklish i dont know how i am going to do it. i hope she is not ticklish doing it herself.

I too think the smell is caused by bacteria so a good wash down might help and make sure the clothes are washed and clean. (I am thinking about diapers, we wash them but we all seem to get stink problems sooner or later.)

body odor

Here is my experience with body odor. My kids started having that grown-up body odor at about ages 6 and 3. I googled around a bit and found a lot of people attribute body odor in children to the hormones and antibiotics in our food supply. We went totally organic in our dairy and meat the next day. The problem is 100% gone in my girls and 90% gone in my son. You may want to try it for a few weeks if you are not organic already. Just my experience ...

My daughter is 6.5 and has been wearing deodorant for 4 months. She smells like an adolescent. I didn't want her to get teased at school so I had her start wearing it. Frequent showers are important too.

I read once that hidden food allergies can be the source of body odor. Corn especially.

This may be a sign of puberty starting. You might consider reading up on it and getting some deodrant for her. If a bath takes care of it then I think you should just go with a bath. It may also just be a sign that she needs to bathe using soap more often. I remind dd when she is in the shower to start on her soap at a certain point because she gets so wrapped up in singing that she often forgets to do the soap part.

: OMG i am soo not ready for this!!!!! but it makes sense to me as she is going thru so much moodiness - so much upheaval. unpredictable emotions. one time something is ok. at another the exact same thing is the worst thing in the world. emotions are totally out of whack.

So I actually asked the pediatrician about the BO and puberty at dd's last well child visit, and he said it can happen a long time before puberty. I wouldn't worry too much about that.

I've had to go deodorant free due to skin issues, and I use antibactrial soap(foam) before I step into the shower. My 7 dd started having body ordor, so I have her use it also. Seems to work for us.

: i dont trust pediatricians on this. meaning about puberty and body odour. yes he is right that BO can happen a long time before puberty but it is not always true. because as i started writing on this thread she is showing other signs of puberty. mainly moodiness that is beyond typical 6 or 7 year behaviour. and comprehension of certain ideas. i cant really explain it. you know they are suddenly grown up - more mature about things.

i got my periods early, so she might get them early too. in maybe 3 or 4 years . OMG!!!! its interesting i have followed my mom's pattern almost identically.
