Acid reflux, anyone?

Never in my life have I had acid reflux until now. The last week has been horrendous. Last night we ate at Chili's, I got a fish sandwich, and I was SO sick when we got home with reflux and heartburn.

I'm pretty anti western-meds and would love some natural solutions...anyone have any? Ugh...it's so awful.

Yes, it is awful I have it really badly, too, but I succumbed to the Western Meds and use them daily - and boy do I know it if I forget! I hope you find a great natural treatment - nothing I tried worked for me.

Homeopathic Nux Vomica 30X has worked for me as well as papaya enzyme tablets and even fresh fruit or a whole (live) food supplement I take when I remember.
The nux usually works if I take it early, but if I wait, the papaya is my best bet.
No, I had never had reflux or heartburn before I was pregnant. It sure isn't fun. I really don't see how people can deal with this ALL THE TIME. At least I know, at worst, I'll have it occasionally until the end of August.

I've found that fresh/canned/frozen pineapple helps. Also black or green tea with nothing in it (no sugar, cream, or herbal stuff) makes me feel a bit better... though DH often has acid reflux/indegestion and he swears by ginger tea (which makes me feel worse so ymmv).

If it's too bad though I take a generic tums type thing and use as many pillows as it takes to get comfy in a mostly upright position.

Hang in there... this is one of those not so much fun things they should really warn people about earlier in the books!

I also take papaya enzymes, which work well for me. I do have to remember to eat a few after every meal or snack or it sneaks back up on me. However, they taste pretty good and are easy benign.

I have found the only thing that really helps me is Zantac.

But things that help on top of that (since the reflux breaks through) are:
an apple
glass of milk (eaten with cookies or something yummy) :
papaya enzymes

I've heard about papaya helping people, but it does nothing for me. Smaller meals help a great deal. The only thing that works for me when I get it is plain old Tums, which is Calcium Carbonate and is used in some homeopathic remedies.

pineapple
digestive enzymes

not eating anything fried, greasy or really processed. Just eating small meals and trying not to eat too much at one time.

Good luck!!

I'm afraid that Zantac was the only thing that worked for me. I had reflux so bad it actually destroyed my voice for weeks. I had literally no voice at all. I'm barely back to normal two months later.

papaya enzyme are the BEST!

Baking soda in water is working MUCH better for me this time than Tums did with DD. I too had never had heartburn/acid reflux before I was pregnant. I remember trying to describe the feeling to my mother, not knowing what it was.

it's tums all the way for me,evry bloody night as well.Sorry no alternative suggestions here.I found what works for and I am not messing with it!!

Stay away from Chilis!!

I find that yogurt and magnesium works for me. I take Natural Calm brand and it is the best also at relaxing sore muscles.

my last midwife had me take betaine HCl with meals, which actually raises the acidity in your stomach. she told me that your body doesn't produce as much acid when you're pregnant which means that food sits in your belly and ferments and gets all gaseous, and all of that grossness starts backing up into your esophagus.

i wasn't too interested in trying it, but all the rolaids i was taking was blocking my iron absorption, and i was anemic.... surprisingly (to me at least) it worked like a charm!

i found it in the natural food section at the grocery, in the supplement/vitamin aisle...

my mw suggested the following for heartburn:

papaya enzymes
raw almonds
1 Tblsp apple cider vinegar in 1/4 cup water
capsium homeopathic (3-5 tablets 4 x's a day. once you notice improvement then 1x/day)

I have not tried the papaya enzymes or the capsium homeopathic.

I don't know if the raw almonds helped or not, but they were tasty.

The apple cider vinegar did instantly knock out heartburn/acid reflux that had been keeping me up all night! Though it was not tasty. I gagged so much that my dh thought I was puking. The relief lasted for over an hour, which I think would have done the trick if I could have fallen asleep. Unfortunately, I could not.

good luck!

The tums didn't really work for me but the papaya enzymes do!

Good luck!

My acid reflux and heartburn are ridiculously bad; to the point where I feel faint and nauseous. I usually eat some TUMS at work, otherwise I mix some baking soda in cool water, which is very effective. Every food I eat gives me heartburn, even mild and bland foods...

A few days ago, I had the spiciest salsa and chips and I had no heartburn, but them 2 nights ago, I had homemade non spicy beans and brown rice and I had horrible heartburn.
Whats up with that!!??
(Ooo, but that was really good salsa. Craving salsa now)

I just remembered that I heard eating apples helps acid reflux too. Personally, apples give me reflux just like anything else.
