Cat-I love the name Isla!

Headaches- I have had them on and off for a couple of weeks, I didn't have any meds at the birth, not even tylenol. I blame hormones.

DD's diaper rash is just about gone! We have been giving her new probiotics fora few days, othere than that we have not changed a thing.

Our nightime sleep is ok. DD goes to bed at 9ish and goes 3-4 hrs. Then wakes to eat 2-3 times before I get up with DS around 730. She usually nurses and goesright back to sleep, but it would be nice if she would go a longer period! I am feeling more and more sleep deprived.

mamarana - Anna was projectial vomiting for the first two weeks, its finally transitioned to "spit up" and it all smells like vomit, even her breath long before or after spitting up smells like vomit...

lissa - I had to be completely knocked out w/ DD1 after two attempts at a spinal. I woke up screaming and crying when I realized what had happened, don't remember the recovery room at all, didn't get to see her till about 4-5 hours after they pulled her out of me, did not get to nurse her and in about 15 minutes they swept her off to NICU and I didn't get to see her again for many many hours. DH had to help me piece together the first few days of DD1's life, because I was so full of drugs. It was the absolute worst experience of my life, but three years later it is much easier to type that now than it was trying to post the story on here the months following. With time it will get better.

Dairy Allergy - don't forget all the dairy in damn near any store bought food. DD2 would be doing great and all of a sudden the rash would come back and she would get fussier. Turned out my gma hadn't checked the bread she had started giving us at sunday lunch - had dairy in it. I literally could not have ANYTHING dairy for her first 4 months, including any processed food. Now I am a constant label reader.

Just popping in here to say HI! I feel out of touch with my DDC and miss it a bit. DD is great, an "easy" baby (knock on virtual wood), DS adjusting amazingly well, but my household has just been busy & not very private lately (my mother is staying with us till the end of this week). I want to know what's going on with everyone, more birth story details, what the babes are like...etc!

I hope to check in more soon.

What kind do you give her? I'm trying to figure out if I need to get a dairy free kind since Ezra seems to be sensitive to that. However, I'm taking regular probiotics and he seems ok with that.

It is in a lactose base, but it is supposed to be a really good probiotic. JaneS recommended this brand. After being on the allergy board and seeing all of her posts, I have come to trust her judgment about probiotics and such. I am taking their intensive caps.

She will nurse throughout the day but it's enough to get her content and she's back asleep. I'm not too concerned but I do think it's not the norm for a 7 week old to be so sleepy. Anyone else have/have had a sleepy 2 month old?
Could she be having a growth spurt? I notie that during growth spurts, all they seem to do is eat and sleep.

My kids get out of school for the Summer tomorrow. I'm scared! I joke, but I seriously am concerned. Right now, the two littles and I lay down for a nap every day. THAT won't be happening with the kids home from school. Also, DH is back to 3rd shift so I'll have to figure out how to keep the kids quiet so they don't keep him awake. Oy.

G did so much better last night. I stopped with any soda (I had been having a little Sierra Mist or Root Beer) and chocolate (although I'd only had a few little mini's). I don't know if that's it or not, but in addition to him sleeping better and not being cranky, I dropped 6 more lbs! WOOT!

When DH is on third shift everyother month, he sleeps in the attic. We created a room up there with carpet, a bed, tv...etc and added a window ac unit. The attic is almost sound proof. Do you have space to do something like that? It'll be less stress for you and the kids and I bet your DH will get more rested in less time and he will be able to get up earlier and spend time with the family before he goes to work. When DH slept down here, he was up and down for the whole day and absolutely WORTHLESS lol, but once he started sleeping up there, he will sleep from about 8am to 1pm or 2pm and he is good to go.

So even caffeine free soda can affect them? I may need to cut it out.
We don't really have a space like that for him. We have the entire finished basement, but we'd be over his head so I think it might be even worse!

I'm not sure if it's the soda effecting him, but it was coincidental, if not. It's probably more the chocolate than the soda.

Though I was talking to my midwife about my headaches and she told me to go back to having a cup of caffeine a day. I REALLY don't want to, though. I swear that's the difference in how not cranky my last two were, but maybe not!

tummy sleeping a success! Much easier night, he slept between all his feeds and went back down easily. also helped him get his gas out, that little bit of pressure on the tummy, hoping it continues

Thank you! That's exactly what I'm looking for. I'm bummed though...looks like orders received today won't be processed until Monday But, I decided to do the 2nd day so I can have it sooner, it's worth it! Looks like an excellent product.

That's awesome!!

I've been doing some reading on yeast and some pretty serious diets and measures to rid both mom and baby of yeast. I'm not sure how far to take it at this point. His rash seems to be growing AGAIN and I don't know how to interpret that. I have had very little sugar for three days, going on four. I may look into seeing and ND. Any thoughts? My nipples were pretty sore yesterday, and pink, but no spots in his mouth. I did a different position for the right breast and it was fine early this morning, and I gave the left breast a break for two feedings and it's a little better.

have you tried grapefruit seed extract? orally for you and on your nipples, diluted of course
post #52 of 171
I second the gse. Gentian violet works really well too.

Have you looked at Dr. jack Newman's web site? He has great resources for thrush protocols.

I haven't been using on my nipples as I wasn't sure if I should even treat there since I don't see any thrush. Should I anyway, and swab his mouth? His mouth is clear and except yesterday, bfing is very comfortable. I've been using GSE in his baths. Just now, I put it in our laundry, and yesterday drank some in water (should do it more though). I thought of using the diluted solution on his butt, perhaps that can be a little wash before applying the ointments that I've been using.

I've read some of Jack Newman's stuff and I guess I'm sometimes confused whether to treat it as thrush or just treat the diaper area. I do think it's systemic to some point. I'm aware of passing it back and forth so I don't know if I'm doing good on one of us but if not killing the yeast on both of us, I'm maybe just going in circles.

I've seen Threelac mentioned a lot on the H&H board and wonder if I should give that a try with this other stuff.

pumpimg at keyboard
treat systemically-
use GSE, but you also need probiotics to replace what you are killing. strong ones.
biotin kills yeast too, start w 500mcg and work your way up slowly to 5g or more. i know people who treat yeast only with biotin. need magnesium when u take it.
take probiotics 2 hrs away from GSE.
candex between meals 3x per day.
threellac-can work for some, but if you have latent strep throat in your body you can have a bad reaction.
s. boulardii-good yeast known to crowd out bads yeast.

Thanks for that info. What do you think about diet? I was reading about only having green veggies, no sweet veggies, no potatoes, no vinegar (is a little in salad dressing ok?), no sugar, no breads, no meat with antibiotics, no dairy of course, no grains two days in a row (switch up every day). Maybe some of that is extreme. What do you recommend?

I honestly find it difficult to try that diet and be able to eat enough or stick with it.
That is definitely extreme, and I wouldn't go that route unless I exhausted every other option first.

Even if you don't have pain, definitely treat your breasts with gv or gse or Dr. Newman's all purpose nipple ointment.

When I was a bf peer support counsellor, I helped a lot of people get rid of thrush, and no one I know personally had to go to those extremes. I think a person would have to be battling some hard core systemic yeast that was unresponsive to regular treatments if such extreme dietary measures are needed.

OK, thanks for that. I do plan to keep cutting sugar and dairy but maybe that'll be it for now.

i would avoid processed sugar and i wouldn't eat tons of carbs but that is an extreme diet to try. i agree with lissa, trry it only if nothing else works. also that nipple cream has steroids i think, may not want to go that route, esp if your nipples dont hurt.

So the past 2 days or so, Olivia has been pulling away from the breast after several minutes, and become pretty frustrated. I switch sides, and she's fine for a bit and then the same thing happens. She sometimes coughs a bit too. Could this be that my letdown is a little too much for her? If so, any suggestions or experience with how we can overcome this?

In other news, she's 8lbs already! She was weighed yesterday at 9 days old. She was born at 7lbs 9.5oz, and was 7lbs 2oz when we left the hospital. So she's definitely getting enough to eat!

Sounds like forceful let down. I had that with Ezra a week or so ago. In addition to what kellymom says, I also recommend having it as calm as you can with feeding and don't shift and jostle. If I can just ge still and let him focus and eat, he does fine.http://www.kellymom.com/bf/supply/fast-letdown.html I sat him next to me to eat so he'd be sitting up and that helps. I also sometimes express some or pump a little if my breast is really full.
