So we're about to start DS on his journey toward the potty. I saw these. I like these but am not sure if we should use some sort of cover with them. Thoughts? It says they're padded and absorbent but should I still use a cover?

Those pants you linked to are plain cotton. We have plenty like them; not that exact brand, but so similar that you'd never see the difference. The padding is enough to prevent a puddle on the floor, but not enough to prevent clothing from getting wet. Honestly, I think that even with a cover, they won't hold a full pee. Pants like that are most useful once your LO is mostly reliable, but when you need a bit of extra protection in case of the occasional accident. If you want something more like a diaper, that will hold a full pee, but pulls up, then you might like the Imse Vimse pants better. They have a layer of PUL for waterproofing. Or the Starbunz or Happy Heiny trainers, which are pocket-style, so that you can add more absorbency, and PUL on the outside, with optional snaps in case of a messy poo. If cheap is a priority, Gerber does make waterproof trainers. They will hold a bit more than the padded undies do. The outer is Peva, though, which makes a crinkly sound when baby walks.
I've often thought that there's a gap in the market, when it comes to really good trainers. Somebody ought to be making something cloth that fills the disposable pull-up niche, ya know? I've never found trainers that were really terrific, in all my searching.
