Took my husband to a urologist today

My husband had a consult with a urologist today for a vasectomy (surgery date is scheduled for Aug 7th!!!!!). You gals here helped me determine that my husband is intact (yep, I'm that naieve, didn't know if he was circ'd or not because he's the only guy I've ever been with ).

I was on guard for the dr to bring up circ'ing him, in fact I had already come to the conclusion (although had not discussed it with hubby) that if this dr mentioned circ'ing him, we would find a different urologist. It's not that I thought the dr might circ him without our consent during the vasectomy, it's just that I don't want to work with a dr who would bring up a purely elective procedure for a man who's never had a problem with his foreskin!

(although, there was the argumentative/confrontational side of me that almost WANTED the dr to bring it up so I could argue it with him, I've argued vaccines with immunologists, I've argued breastfeeding with gastroenterologists, I'd like the opportunity to argue circumcision with a urologist!)

Anyway, he didn't mention a thing, just talked to us about the procedure, answered our questions, and that was that!

There's still a huge side of me that wants to have a circumcision discussion with him, maybe at hubby's post-op follow up I'll bring it up, I"m trying to formulate how I'd broach it...something like "Thank you for not mentioning anything to us about circumcision, we're against it and chose to leave our sons intact, I was wondering what your take is on it."

Well honestly it would be highly unusual (and quite creepy) if a urologist very randomly brought up circumcision and tried to push it on your husband, a grown man!

Well dh is already circed and has a skin bridge and the urologist that did his V did ask him if he wanted that "snipped" while he was at it.

Honestly it wouldnt have shocked me a bit if the urologist had brought it up. Usually though GA is required for a circ so it really couldnt be done during a normal V.

I wouldn't have been surprised at all if he had brought it up. He's a urologist, after all, notoriously the most pro-circ drs. Hubby is having surgery in that area. I didn't see it as a stretch for him to recommend having it done at the same time. I half expected to hear horror stories about elderly men that he treats who have terrible infections, blah blah blah, and for him to say "since I'll be down in that area anyway, you want me to take care of that for you?"

But he didn't

It would be highly unusual for any doctor to suggest or recommend circumcision to a fully grown adult for no reason. I'm surprised you thought he would.

I knew that if you wanted to circ an older infant or child, GA is required, but for an adult too? I thought the reason was more of keeping the child still, and there aren't circumstraints past the newborn stage. It's not something I've researched since I obviously don't want my husband circ'd!

The urologist didn't even check his foreskin or retract it (or ask him to retract it) and check for infection, fungus, tight frenulums, nothing. Just the simple "turn your head and cough" and "this is where I'll make the small incision".

Yes for adults they are circed under GA. I think it is partly due to the fact that most men wouldnt want to be awake during and because pain relief is easier that way. Not sure really but all adult circs I have read about they where put under GA.

yeah that would be unusual. even when i was having trouble with my foreskin the urologist did not recommend it, it was just an option. maybe i did not get a pushy doctor though.

why would urologists be more pro circ?

Actually the use of local anesthetic for adult circs is quite common.
Because they are the ones that see the most men who have "issues" and they almost always want to circ without trying to fix the issue first. Whether it be a yeast infection or phimosis.

I would say more than half the posts we see here where a Dr. has recommended circ they where urologists. Out of all those posts not a single one was a true reason to circ.

I had never read or seen that on TV (medical shows) thank you for that information.

yeah mine was done under local anesthetic as were a couple others that i have spoken to. i do not really see the need for general anesthesia...it is a very quick procedure.

like OBs and c sections? sometimes its needed but some do them way more often then actually necessary? i can see that. makes sense.

Yep like that.

i never thought i would find anything that ticked me off more then pressuring women into c sections. but recommending circ instead of an anti fungal or something might have topped that.. and its definitely creepier

Yeah but... why would they suggest circ if there was no problem with the penis? For a vasectomy they're not even doing anything to the penis. There would be no reason to even think about circumcision. I just don't understand the logic of "expecting" the urologist to make the suggestion in a vasectomy appointment.

I was just on guard for it. Why does any dr suggest circ'ing any male with no problem? Age shouldn't matter... Urologists specialize in penises, so presumably they buy into every theory out there on cleanliness, infection, etc, so I was definitely on guard for him to bring up the fact that hubby isn't circ'd and suggesting that it get done before he has problems crop up.

I have heard (and read on here) so many stories of men going in with a simple infection and circ is the recommended solution. My son had a UTI when he was 9 weeks old, and literally within 30 seconds of getting the diagnosis the dr was talking to me about circ'ing him.

I had to go to a urologist for a very rare issue and the issue of Circing came up. I told him I was having a boy and Dh and I were fighting tooth and nail about. Of course he was very pro-circ, but, he said he does not push it on his patients. He did have the "well do it now or later attitude" which annoyed me...but I had no choice there is only one female urologist in our area and she has no bedside manner so unfortunetely I had to go to this guy. I never went back....someday I will have to but for now...now way. When I do go back I cannot wait to brag about my 2 uncirc'd boys!!!!

wow, i'm really glad i didn't get one of those doctors! but i live in arizona, neonatal circumcision rate is below 30%...so maybe not many of them push it here?
