Question for moms of dairy sensitive babies!

I'm fairly certain my DS is dairy sensitive. When I cut out obvious forms of dairy he became a different baby. (I don't drink milk or eat cheese...but I don't read labels) Gone was the waking every couple of hours at night (he went from up every 2 to up every 4), gone was the constant need to nurse during the day (he started taking LONG naps), gone was the fussing while awake (he became content to just be awake and look around), gone was the horrible and painful gas!

Well...like I said, I didn't read food labels because cutting out the obvious stuff seemed to be enough...until today. Yesterday I was craving donuts (I know, healthy choice) and ended up eating 4 glazed with choc icing (I usually eat healthy! Really!) On the box it said one of the ingredients is milk, but it was toward the end of the list so I didn't think there was THAT much. That was earlier in the morning. Last night we were up every 3 hours and today he's been fussy and won't nap and his baby acne looks worse and has spread to make his hair bumpy too. He's also had a couple of poopy diapers with a tinge of pink in them (from what I've read on MDC, a telltale food allergy sign) I mentioned to MIL that I think it was the donuts and she said "He cant' be THAT sensitive!" (and then asked how I was supposed to get my dairy in...she's one that believes you NEED cow milk...but that's another thread)

So, after the novel, my question is: Can he be that sensitive? I also ate a brownie yesterday...could it actually be a chocolate sensitivity?

TIA!

Well, if you ate 4 donuts and a brownie (which would presumably contain dairy as well), you actually had a decent amount of dairy. And many mamas on here have experienced that reintroducing something after cutting it out can make symptoms worse. I would suggest you become a diligent label reader and cut out dairy in ALL forms. Then you will be able to tell if it is just the dairy or the dairy and something else.

My DS has that reaction to chocolate... but I can totally believe that was enough dairy to set him off too!

haha are you kidding? (that was a loving laugh btw) that is WAY enough dairy to set a kid off! my DD would be very upset-- however I'm not sure tha's what's happening--since it sounds like you may be having hidden dairy in your life often---however I would still think this was the culprit--make some homeade donuts (not sure how)

Yeah, that's a lot of dairy--and a lot of straight milk (I've found that milk itself cause worse reactions here than milk products such as cheese and yogurt).

The brownie may not have had dairy, but almost certainly did if it had milk chocolate or frosting. The donuts, though, probably had milk in the recipe and again in the icing/frosting. If they were cream- or custard-filled, that's more dairy there.

Diary is "hidden" in a bunch of stuff. Almost all commercial baked goods have dairy, including many types of crackers and chips. Most chocolate has dairy, though some dark/semisweet chocolate is dairy-free. Most frozen snacks and dinners have dairy. I even found dairy in chicken concentrate (like bullion cubes, but in paste form) and taco seasoning!

All that to say, I'd advise you to become an avid reader of labels. I don't remember the site, but someone posted it on another thread here ... it listed all the names of that you can find dairy products listed as. If anybody knows where that is, maybe you can post a link?
