Tiny training pants or underpants?

DS is almost 21 months and I'd really like to potty train him this summer. For one, I want to take advantage of the warm weather and do as much outside-nakey-time as possible, and two, I'm due with #2 in December (DS will be 27 months) and I'd love to have him out of diapers before the new baby comes.

My problem is this - he's very very small for his age. Fairly average for height but very slim and light. He's around 21 lb now, I think. His 6-9M shorts from Target from last summer still fit him this year. The 12M shorts I got him there this year fit okay over a cloth diaper, but fell off of him when I used a disposable while on vacation. He's still wearing infant prefolds and can fit a small cover in most brands. It seems that most brands of trainers will be huge on him, even in the smallest size. I've also been keeping my eyes open for toddler underwear and the smallest I'm seeing is 2T.

We're nowhere close to going full-force with the PL'ing, but I'm afraid that it's hindering him that every time I take him I have to undo a snappi and take a prefold off of him (we usually do coverless around the house). I think he would benefit from being able to pull his diaper/trainers/underwear up and down himself.

And lastly, as is always the case, the budget is tight so I need to try to find something affordable. If anyone has any crafty ideas for something I can make/rig up myself I'd be open to that too.

Thanks in advance for any replies

My DD was quite tiny, and the training pants that fit her best were

Imse Vimse

Kushies (although I found they tend to shrink with washing, so they ended up TOO small)

Motherease (these were my favourites - easy to pull up and down, nice fit, great capacity - they look poofy until you get clothes over them)

DD has a similar problem and we went with iplay swim diapers. She can pull them up and down. They aren't absorbent, but catch well enough that we don't end up with an outfit change very often since she normally has an accident and then immediately tells me. When we do need some absorbency, I put her in the super thick Gerber undies.

I also like the Imse Vimse, but they are better for later in the PL process since they aren't as absorbant. My DD was also super small and the Imse Vimse fit well and the HH XS trainers also fit her. They are a little poofier, but they will certainly be easier for him to pull up and down compared with prefolds. Unfortunately, I don't really know any good way to rig up prefolds to work like training pants

Snap-EZ trainers are great & would probably fit him. They come with snaps on the side for 'messy' accidents & an extra row of snaps for a smaller fit. My son uses them & so far no leak accidents, we even use them as swimmers.

Bright Bots. They're usually pretty inexpensive, semi-waterproof, and come in really small sizes. Your DS would probably fit well in a medium.

Yay! A new Canadian store to bookmark! Wahoo!

I agree with the Snap-EZ - I bought 2 pairs for DD at least a year ago. I wish I had paid more attention to the thigh measurement, though - I guessed - and one pair are so gappy at the thighs they're unwearable even now. But they're SO pretty!

I buy baby bloomers from the thrift store for 10 cents. They are usually 0-6 months on the label designed to fit over a diaper so they fit great as tiny undies. Gerber also sells 18 month size training pants that are cheap and fit pretty small.

I haven't seen the Gerber ones at Target, but I'll check Babies R Us as that will probably be the easiest option. Thanks!
