TMI** Glucola question

I did this stupid test today and it was pretty much more miserable than I could have imagined. It made me have an awful sugar high and then crash. Then starting about three hours after I started to have a stomach ache and then diarrhea. Has anyone else experienced this? I will never take that test again.

Coming from personal experience as a type one diabetic glucola is a concentrated form of glucose which is used to treat hypoglycemia in insulin dependent diabetics.

When given concentrated forms of glucose, diabetic or not, the sudden rise in blood sugar, will react with your pancreas working overtime. Since your body is pumping out insulin as fast as it can to lower your blood sugar, it causes havoc on your organs resulting in GI problems, headaches, dizziness, ect.

Its totally normal for that to happen. Its also a horrible feeling. I hope you feel better and hope I helped some

Yep, it can happen. Just like how some people get diarrhea from large amounts of juice, the extra sugar triggers your body to do funky things.

I'm planning on doing a home log for a week or so, varying the time of day, and giving the log to my OB. If he's concerned at all, then I'll do a fasting draw, but I think that fasting draw will have to be high for me to agree to the glucose test this time!!! If I'm handling my normal diet fine, then why challenge me with a nasty artificial drink??

Here's hoping you "passed" it at least!

I didn't have any side effects, but I read the bottle and it listed everything you're experiencing as possible side effects.

I hope you're feeling better soon!

only a few more days until my test and this is exactly why i took off of work for the day. i am kind of a big baby and i think that i will not feel well at all (but we are hoping to catch a matinee of UP )

I'm taking it tomorrow and planning to take a snack of some kind to the appt with me to eat as soon as the blood leaves my arm. I'm hoping that might curb some of the unpleasant side effects a bit.

Yes, Happened to me the last time that is why I am not doing glucola and I am going to eat the food eq. of 50 grams of sugar. I posted it on another thread.

Doser girl, UP is fantastic. I wish I had had something like that to look forward to.

But thank you all for your reassurance, I feel much better today. I know I have a sensitive stomach (drinking too much juice can mess me up). So, I should have just refused the test flat out. Now I know for next time.

Also, some things that the lab tech? phloebotomist? said include: In response to my question "What is in that drink" "Don't worry, it's healthy." And "It's just like drinking a soda, so it's good for you"

SO frustrating. Soda isn't good for me, there's a reason I rarely drink it, because it's crap. Also, I don't know that drinking 50 grams of sugar can be described as a "health drink". GRRR....

Oh, what a culture we live in!!! Makes no sense, does it?

The last time I had my younger son (special needs) at the gastroenterologist, I admitted to the nutritionist and gastro that I let him have McDonald's chicken nuggets way more often than I should, and you know what they said? "That's okay! They're good for kids like him!" Um...junk food is good for kids in any circumstances??? I think not! It's true that a diet slightly higher in calorie-dense foods is what he needs just to maintain his weight, but certainly chicken nuggets should NOT qualify as a "good way" to get extra calories into him!
