spider bite equals tetanus??

That's a new one for me DS was bit by mosquitos this weekend (not a big deal). One of them started out looking like a mosquito bite but quickly started swelling and got rock hard. I'm pretty sure it was actually a spider bite on that one. I called the on-call nurse Sunday night and she, of course, asked his vaccination status. I replied that he has a religious exemption. Her response? "Oh. In that case.... it could be tetanus. You should bring him in tomorrow morning for the vaccine".

Now, I'm fairly smart and asked her why she thought it was tetanus when he didn't have any stiffness, no fever, no high heart rate, no sweating, no difficulty swallowing, etc. I asked her what, exactly, would give her the impression it was tetanus. She kinda stumbled around for a few seconds so I then asked why he would need the vaccine and not the TIG. She was silent for a few more seconds and then said "Well, just bring him in if you want to. Or you can keep him home and put some neosporin on it". Thanks. I'll keep him home

Don't you just LOVE stumping nurses/doctors?? There's a feeling that I get from a successful argument, or even just from pointing out stupidity in a person that's in a position of authority...it just makes me feel...GOOD!

I once mentioned to a dr that I would most definitely be testing my sons' titers to MMR before deciding whether to give that vaccine, and he responded with "be careful with that, you could pick up placental immunity" to which I said "well, if he's immune from ANY source of exposure, WHY would I vaccinate him then??" The dr's response?: "Look, I'm not saying that the vaccine schedule is perfect, I'm not going to argue the merits of it with you. Just be careful."

Yep, that's exactly what I'm doing!

LOL...he has a religious exemption, but the nurse thought that you'd break the exemption to vaccinate him against something she thought he already had? LOL...that's actually kind of funny because it makes no sense. Even funnier that you stumped her. LOL!

Yes, as if my response was going to be "Oh, well, in that case I guess my religion is going to change overnight. We'll be there first thing in the morning for the vaccine. Thanks!" She wasn't concerned enough about tetanus to say we should see a doctor in the morning... just go get the vaccine. Doh!

But, a few days later, he's doing fine Spider bite is fine, almost gone. Of course, now he seems to have picked up a cold. Thank you, daycare!

I'm this...

DS has a bite on his foot & the doc want to see him tomorrow a.m.

I was searching online and saw numerous websites where tetanus vax is standard "bite" treatment - but can't find why???

Anyone know?

Because they will use any excuse to give a tetanus vaccine. Is your child unvaccinated? If so then if they are REALLY concerned about tatanus they will offer you the TIG. If they push DTaP you know it's a load of crap. If your son is vaccinated already it shouldn't be an issue

: I can't believe they pushed a tetanus vaccine for a sprained ankle....whatever nurse or doc convinced you of that should be sued for malpractice IMO. SHAMEFUL!!!!
