DD bites her lower lip all the time

Thread Starter
17 month old DD bites her lower lip all the time, even when she's sleeping. Her lip becomes blackish because blood doesn't go through the lip.
I tell her that's not good. I even hit her lip, sometimes it works but most of the time, she doesn't care what I'm doing or saying.
Could you suggest what I should do?
Thanks.

Try not to draw anymore attention to it. She's pretty young to understand why it's "not okay" to bite her lip. If she was older, I would say it was a "nervous habit", as my DD2 did this during times of anxiety. By hitting her in the mouth, you may be sending her very confusing messages...(she can't hurt her lips, but mommy can?)

would a teether or some other bite-friendly toy help, something you could remind her to bite when she seems to crave that sensation?
