What's your preference?

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I'm new here, so this is kinda like my introductory post.

But I also have a question along with this, what do you guys prefer, cloth or disposable?

I'm having my first soon (I cant wait!) and I'm trying to figure out what to use for him.

All of your input will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Cloth without question. We've been exclusively using cloth since my daughter was 3 weeks old - she's now 2. Most cloth diaper online stores have info about why cloth is better...just do some googling. I really recommend Abby's Lane - she has good prices and offers free shipping. But, there are lots of other good online stores as well. Green Mountain Diapers also has good information, but she is biased towards a 100% cotton system, which is great, but it's not helpful if you really want pocket diapers or aios made with synthetic fibers.

Welcome and Congratulations!

Cloth
and for us -- non synthetic and natural fibers. preference has been prefolds and fitted. Nikky covers being my all time cover next to the idea of wool.

Why:

20 years ago for the environmental reasons and financial spin into my pocket.
10 years ago, same.
8 years ago, my baby had acute allergies to the small number of disposables I used for the first 3 weeks while I got my milk & routine established.

I started reading--------------------- A LOT over the last 8 years. NOW

cloth is for the reduction of:

Dioxins
Tributyltin
links to asthma
links to male infertility
waste of our precious 2% of natural waters in production costs. There is NO argument any longer about disposable vs. cloth in the water world these days with the new HE appliances. Do your own homework -- don't take the big manufacturers (or me) at their word. They wanna sell -- even at the expense of highjacking your intelligence for a moment to do so.

Cloth is easy, has a few bumps in the learning curve but lots of room for mistakes.
Can be used for additional babies, paired with wipes is a huge savings providing your startup is not super high end product. Ask for diapers for your shower -- you may be surprised that your cost is lowered that much more. I

Happy bums, reduced rashes. Again, do your own homework the stats have been around for a long time.

Cute prints make it a wee bit fun too.

Less hauling to the curb and back and forth to the store -- huge reduced emissions.

Not enough time to go on and on today --but it should give you the idea. Its a much bigger picture behind the choice.

Take the leap to cloth ........it's a soft landing! is my tag line for a reason.

Best wishes in whatever your choice. Enjoy first babies are so much fun.

definitely cloth! im cding my 2nd baby and i love it. there are so many easy to use diapers out there and such a wide price range that there really isn't any excuse not to cd. taking care of the cds and using them is not hard at all after you get used to it. if you would have asked me six years ago whether i would consider cding, i would have laughed. now i love it!

I most definitely prefer cloth diapering...:

CDing is better for baby, the finances, and the environment. Cloth is safer and more comfortable for baby. Cloth is very affordable. Cloth is great for the environment because your diapering system will not contribute to landfill waste.

BTW, I have completely simplified why CDing is just "better." But, PPs have already bored you will the details.... I just wanted to respond as another CDing advocate.

Plus, I think that CDing is fun...

Hands down cloth diapers. DS was in disposibles until he was 7 months so I have used both.

He got a ton more rashes in disposible diapers.
I hated putting all those nasty chemicals on his bottom.
We had way more poop blowouts in disposible diapers.
Cloth diapers just look cuter!
They are not that much work and I love that I don't have to buy diapers every other week.

Beware: you're going to find a lot of cloth lovers here!

I discovered cloth when my ds1 was a few months old. I didn't know anyone who used cloth, so I had never really considered it - until my friend started considering it for her coming nb. So I started investigating...was a little nervous when I dove in...but now I am soooo glad. I love cloth!

It's really not as hard as people tend to think. There are so many cute and convenient styles out there. It's cheaper. Better for baby. Better for environment.

I admit there are days that I don't feel like washing diapers (just like I don't feel like washing dishes or folding clothes or cooking dinner!!!), but when I think about the alternative of putting my kid back in disposibles, I'm so glad to have my cloth.

It seems like a big decision now, and pricey up front...but definately a worthy investment!

cloth. and at this point (5 yrs later) I prefer AIO's, specifically Bum Genius organic OS AIO w/snaps and Dream-Ez organic AIO's. My baby is almost 2.5, though, so he is on the move.

Cloth - hand down.

I just recently switched to cloth full time. I refuse to buy anymore disposable diapers, ever! It just makes more financial and ecological sense.

Also, cloth diapers smell a lot less. I used to work in a sewage plant, both when I was pregnant with DD and about five months after. Disposable diapers could make me gag, even when raw sewage from the entire city couldn't.

Without a doubt cloth. We've been using cloth since his very first diaper about two hours after Henry was born. However, we did a stint of a few weeks in disposables when he grew out of his newborn stash and I hadn't decided what to get next (babies grow a lot faster than I'd expected! duh). I try to block out the memories of our three weeks in disposables. They were expensive, we were always running out, the amount of garbage made me cringe and there was poo EVERYWHERE. No brand or size could contain the poo. Several times a day I was cleaning poo off his back, legs, clothes, everywhere.

I know it's hard to believe before you get started, but cloth diapering is pure pleasure. I love love love my stash, loved shopping for it, love washing it, love looking at it hanging on the line, love my LOs adorable little bum in a nice CD, love the feel of patting his CD bum, love rolling up CDs to pack them in the diaper bag, love making CD changes in public look super easy as the sposie moms look on, love knowing that I am taking a little extra time here and there to do what I think is best for my boy....convinced yet?

I've never used disposables, they gross me out too much (just can't get past the idea of putting sodium polyacrite gel against my baby's genitals and then sealing it up in plastic), so cloth by default.
