HELP! Re-entering the CD world!

I used traditional cloth and rubber pants with my two sons. I went totally disposable with my daughter. I am thinking of getting "back into the game" with this newest baby but obviously the world of CD has changed dramatically in 10 years!

Where should I start. I would love to do the AIOs but they seem hideously expensive. Those "snappy" things look great but then I don't know what covers are nice but not bank breakers.

Any help or stearing would be helpful!

TIA

Coolababy makes great AIOs that are very affordable. They are as low $7 each depending on how many you order. I have about 30 and absolutely love them. A search here or on DS will turn up mixed feelings about buying from China but general consensus is that the quality is very good. I believe that you can only get them on eBay.

You're right that things have changed - there are tons of options! But the old-school prefolds with covers are as easy as ever, and definately cheap! Easy to wash, easy to put on, once you're past the learning curve (easy, since you've used them before). No folding, no stuffing. Easy.

I really do like snappis - they help me get a snug fit, faster than pins.

My favorite covers at the moment are Thirsties. Again, easy to care for, and great gussets. They run around $11 a piece, which isn't too bad. I also just made a wool interlock soaker for my 2 yo for night - and I think I might be in love with that. My other hand-knit soakers are great for day, but can't stand up to our night-time needs.

You can also find lots of cd's used - which would be a more economical option...

Good luck!

i think a trifolded prefold in a cover is almost as easy as an aio. especially if you "pre-load" it and have it all ready to go before the diaper change. i prefer to snappy, just because my dd is still in the explosive bf poo stage, lol. we use bummis, but i have heard great things about thirsties covers. as far as aios go, i love my green acre designs stuffable aios. aios are pricier, but a stash of those is still cheaper than using sposies, especially if you can find them used or on sale. there are many one size pocket and ai2 dipes that will fit through a couple sizes out there which could help with the cost. that may be offset if you are wanting something that would last for more than one child because the one size dipes would be used longer and therefore become more worn. so anyway that's my diaper blabber for the day, lol! good luck!

I personally think that AIO's in the newborn size are over-rated- its a stage where baby will actually stay still for a diaper change and grows SO fast. So for my newborns I like a combo of prefolds- I got some square ones at Green Mountain Diapers that I'm excited about with wrap covers and a snappy, and a few fitteds like Kissaluvs size 0. Once baby is a bit older and bigger, the investment in AIO's is much easier to justify- there are even one size AIO's like Bum Genius from Cottonbabies that will fit until potty training (though I had to walk away from those as my son started taking off all velcro after a year).

Personally, I estimate I was spending over $80 a month on disposibles with my dd years ago, so if I spent a couple hundred on AIO's that fit for just 6 months (once we were in the larges those fit for almost 2 years)- I had saved money.

i agree with those that recommend pfs and covers for the nb stage. they do through so many and dont really pee a ton so you dont usually need a doubler. i used proraps nb size covers and unbleached indian pfs for a good 4-5 mos. cheap, easy and effective. this is a great package actually, i buy all my stuff here. (i would actually ask for 4 nb covers and 4 sm rather than all sm.....unless maybe you have 10lbers)

Things have changed a lot.

Prefolds are always a great option. You can do a couple AIO's instead of a whole set up and not break the bank and see if you like them.

Snappi & Pins are about the same to me and both perform well.

Nikky covers are till around and still and excellent cover. Worth every penny.

Fitteds are really nice though -- imo.
