Best Newborn Cover and How Many?

Thread Starter
This will be my first time CDing a newborn from the start (started with DS at 6 months) and I've decided on mainly using Kissaluvs size 0 fitteds...but I am having a hard time deciding on which cover would be best. I have a Bummis Super Whisper Wrap that I used for DS and I really don't like the "feel" of it for a newborn. It just seems so stiff and plastic-ish. I know this sounds weird, but I don't like for diapers to make sound...: you know what I mean? Ok, probably not...but it is what it is. :

I am sort of overwhelmed at all of the choices and really don't even know where to start in choosing a cover. Any suggestions as to a soft cover that isn't too huge for a newborn? Should I consider wool? What about fleece? The sizing charts for so many of the softer covers seem to start at 8lbs for a newborn and my babies are usually not that big at birth, so I need something I can use from day one.

I am figuring that by the time the baby gets here I should have about a dozen fitteds, plus I already have tons of newborn prefolds as well. I am thinking that I will need like 4 or 5 covers. Does that sound right?

Can anyone offer insight? Thanks in advance!

i freaking love thirsties covers and AIOs i started with Bummis covers and switched kinda accidentally. i had one come my way and couldn't get enough of them!
plus they hold in poo blowouts better then anything i have ever tried!

my ds got down to 6ish lbs at one point and they fit him fine

4 or 5 is plenty imo.

i don't know about wool of fleece, i haven't been sucked into that fluffy addiction yet

I am a big fan of the Thirsties product and second that recommendation. The Polar Bummis might work as well.

If you want something a little softer and fluffier for a newborn, you could try wool. It is just wonderful in terms of leakage protection and is very soft so that would address your "feel" issue. They are also super cute!

Have you looked at the Imse Vimse covers? They make some that are much softer than the Bummis SWW that are organic cotton or velour. Those are really soft and newborn-y.

Good luck!

Ditto the Thirsties recs. I'll be using those in combo with some hand-knit wool for #2 (due Aug!)...

Good luck with your LO! :

I also love my Thirsties covers and AIO's I have for this LO. I am also in love with my Imse Vimse covers, and my CYA (Cloth for Your Angel) wool covers.

Any feedback on the Bummis Whisper Wraps? I ordered 2 Thirsties & 2 Bummis for our LO to see what I like better...it seems Thirsties get all the votes here...

I like proraps for the newborn stage. I'd get 5-8 used ones (used because they don't get worn so long).

I may go against the grain a little here, but I love Imse Vimse covers. I think they work super well, don't feel overly "plasticy" and are organic cotton. Just LOVE them!

Another fan of the Thirsties! I love that they have the whole leg gusset thing. They contained EBF poop extremely well.

Thirsties! They are soft, flexible, durable, and easy to clean. I had 6 covers for DD.

I second (or third) the imse vimse org. cotton covers. I actually know what you mean about the noise and these covers are super quiet, lol. Another great option are the organic caboose bamboo covers. These are really soft and all of the PUL is sandwiched inside the layers so it never touches your baby's skin. Also if you are interested in wool Blue Cloud makes a newborn cover that swoops down in the middle for the belly button. I used with dd and it worked great.

Thanks so much for all of the wonderful advice mamas! It is just so hard to try to figure out what a cover "might" feel like just by looking online. It helps a ton to have people who've actually touched and used them give feedback.

It looks like Thirsties are a big favorite newborn cover, with Imse Vimse right behind.

I've never heard of Caboose Bamboo, Blue Cloud or CYA (which is a name that cracks me up so much that I will probably buy one just for that reason ) so I will definately look into them as well.

If you are using Kissaluvs, you need Thirsties to fit over them. You want extra smalls, and 3-4 covers per dozen diapers.
