Loving My Midwife Practice

Hey Mommas!

So I had finally had my appointment with Midwife today. I think because of the mysterious pain and swelling that I have been dealing with it has felt like extra long since I last went. In any case, she took a look at it, and it's a hernia. Here I am after she said that, literally tears sprouting out of my eyes, and I timidly ask, "does that mean I can't give birth here? Back to the hospital? C-section?" She looks at me giggles, and realizes that I was serious and she was "of course you can give birth here! You might be a little more uncomfortable, but yes you can have a natural birth."

Whew! I am so relieved! Even my blood pressure was a little bit elevated b/c I was so nervous about the swelling. I think that I even FELT it drop after she declared it was going to be alright! Sure I am a little bummed that I have one in the first place, but happy to actually know what it is, and to stop speculating, and worrying how it was going to mess up my birth plans.

Besides that, I gained 8 pounds in a month! I really havn't gained a pound on my home scale this whole month and then 3 days ago I felt like I gained bunch over night. So big growth spurt. Not one word from her that I needed to watch out or slow down. (Again I love this practice!) I am on the taller side and most likely was underweight when this all started, so they are just happy that I am healthy and the baby is healthy.

And the other thing I learned today was that I am apparently having BH contractions and didn't even know it! Haha. I consider myself pretty "in tune" with my body, but apparently the false contractions don't worry me at all. I just thought it was normal for my stomach to do that every once and a while!

In all, I am so happy with my appointment today. SUCH a difference from my OB's office where appointments lasted 5 minutes, today I was there for an hour and a half and left with all questions answered and a smile on my face

SF- tell me about the BH ctrx. I think I may be having them but am unsure. Mine are a little painful though, like sharp stabby pains.

Anyway, I am happy you found your place! This should make things less stressful for you!

oh this is great. i am so glad you get to go to a great place now...doesn't it feel great.

i am also wondering what the BH contractions feel like. someone said i would know if i was having them, they would make my belly hard or feel like a charlie horse in my belly...i haven't had these things.

So does anything need to be done about the hernia? I'm glad she thinks it won't interfere with birth!!!

And a note on the BH...those of you who aren't sure...wait until the next time you have a full bladder, sometimes that makes the sensation more noticeable. Or maybe the next time you notice your baby moving a lot, feel your uterus...baby might be reacting to the extra squeezing by trying to reposition.

JEALOUS! (Not of the hernia - of your super cool midwives.)

That's great news. It must be so nice to have a good connection with your midwives. Mine are nice, but I haven't quite clicked with them yet. Hopefully soon.

Rockdoctor--The Midwife student was feeling my uterus, for size and baby, and she told me I had a very "hard" stomach. A little while after she felt again when we were trying to figure out the position of the baby, and she told me that I must have been having a contraction before, because it was soft again.. But sure enough it got hard again. Now that I think back there have been times when my stomach has felt harder than other times. But it for the most part hasn't been painful or uncomfortable..just hard/tense. I am hoping that this is the worst of it for now

BH Give you that tight hard pulling feeling. They may not hard but they can still stop you dead in your tracks if they are strong enough ones. I liken it to a Charley horse without the intense pain. Although I have had a few clients who experienced wprse BH than labor pains?? Go figure?
