Why do people care about post counts?

I've seen several posts referring to people "upping their post counts" and I was idly wondering- why? What does it matter whether someone has 100 or 1000 posts? Who cares?

I know that some forums, like Parents as Partners, DO require a minimum number of posts that's pretty small if I remember correctly. So beyond that.... what am I missing?
