Newly pregnant, when to contact dr or midwife?

I am newly pregnant, got a positive yesterday afternoon and was even darker this morning. My AF would be due tomorrow. When should I contact a dr or midwife. I am probably going to birth with a midwife but as of right now I haven't decided which one. I have awesome insurance through work and will probably see a dr. first since it will be free (insurance doesn't cover midwives). So when should I call my dr. and let them know? This dr would probably end up being my backup for the birth. TIA!

Hmmm....it's probably up to your comfort level, since you're a second-timer. I ended up wanting to get bloodwork done to confirm everything (I had a really early loss the cycle before this BFP) so I went in around the time AF was due for a blood draw (HcG, progesterone and they checked by Vitamin D and iron stores, too).

A lot of doctors don't really want to see people before 10 or 12 weeks though....you may just want to call your back-up doc and ask what their protocol is.

It's also a great time to interview midwives! That's what our focus is right now (but they tend to fill up around here).

It depends on your area. Where I am if you want a midwife you'd better get your name on the list the day you conceive - there are nowhere near enough of them.

:

I called after getting my bfp at 10dpo and I was on the waiting list for a day until they managed to squeeze me in (and that's only because I talked to her before pg and had a report with her). I think that you should at least call to find out how quickly they get booked up in your area.

It depends on your care provider and your area.

I called my m/w who oversaw my pregnancy with my DD, she said she didn't need to see me for a confirmation appt, it's my 3rd pregnancy I know what I'm doing. She'd see me in July around 10/11 weeks for a first check up

Thanks for the replies ladies. I have some decisions to make regarding the midwife that we use bc my midwife I had for dd is leaving the country this month and will not be back for three years . There are probably 3 other midwives that can be an option. I should probably contact them to set up an interview soon. Uggh.

I called as soon as I got a BFP. I've had two losses as well as three other children, so my OB knows me. I don't have an actual appointment for 2 more weeks (I'll be approximately 8 weeks) but when I started spotting he had no problem with my coming in for some blood hcg levels.
